Solstice Canyon

  • Jun 15, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Solstice Canyon

Details Distance: 3 miles

Elevation: 700 foot gain

Difficulty: 3/10

Trailhead: Head north on Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu Canyon road to Corral Canyon Road and turn right. About a quarter mile up, you will see the gated entrance to Solstice Canyon.

Description: From the gate, follow the service road that runs along the right side of the creek. Bear right at the dirt road that takes you up to the 2 odd looking buildings that house the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. To the right of the second building, take the Rising Sun Trail. This trail heads up the ridge, with great views of the ocean, then drops down into the somewhat mysterious Tropical Terrace. This is actually the ruins of a home build in the 1960s, and burned in 1982. There are exotic plants, lovely pools, a 30 foot waterfall, and a hidden statue of the Virgin Mary just before you cross the creek heading into the ruins. This is really a fun place to explore! You can carefully scramble up the rocks on an extremely steep trail to get above the waterfall to a number of lovely pools. The return route is a pleasant shady service road that runs parallel to the stream.

Lot tends to fill up quickly, arrive early to be sure to get parking.

We will be climbing the waterfall.

and WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

A good workout. I think it was more of a difficulty than a 3, especially the incline. I am not a beginner...but it was worth the extra push. Pretty waterfall!

I have to say it was a great place to see, nice hike...but incline was not easy, it was not for beginners....glad I was able to make it all the way to the top of the waterfall.

A great hike! Just enough hills and valleys for a workout, but not so much to be exhausted.

Was not expecting so much incline....was the last one at my own pace, but worth it. We went all the way up the waterfalls, and lost the group. Loved it It was a beautiful scenery and we came th back through a different trail..

I know the parking and the area. Eighy-eight people is just too much for it to handle. It's not going to be fun.

    June 12, 2013

    • Elizabeth

I would recommend arriving early and carpooling.

      June 13, 2013

    • Sorina

Believe me if all 88 people show up I would be VERY SURPRISED!

concerning the inevitable parking cluster... Many good reasons to choose to park on the ocean side of the PCH, preferably South of the 76 gas station at the bottom of Corral Cyn, for free. Additional hiking distance is insignificant. Apres hike is a no brainer (your parked 20 yards from the wet sand). Utilize the lit crosswalk at Corral Cyn, jay walking is heavily discouraged.

Hi Elizabeth, I am still little confused. Once I take Corral Canyon rd, I keep going past the gate to Solstice Canyon Rd, bare right and also pass the oval looking parking lot (near Dry Canyon trail and TRW Loop trail)? and go up to rising sun trail parking lot?

You can park up the road outside of the park on a turnout along that road. It's extra walking along that road into the park. Then, along the main road into the park to the little parking area where I've yet to get lucky finding a place to park.

I might turn around at the waterfall. I'm overweight and climbing to the top of the waterfall sounds a bit out of my league. I've been to the area, so I know my way around.

Even at 9 a.m. on a Saturday I've yet to get lucky finding a place in that parking lot. Solstice Canyon is a pretty little spot to hike.

It looks like there are only spots for about 10 cars to park. Where should we park if that gets full?
