OK, so some of my fellow hikers and hike leaders like to go to Echo Mountain in Altadena to get way above it all to see the fireworks. Not me....too popular and too much elevation gain; OK, I'm a little lazy. So sue me.
Last year we camped out on a lower mountain in Glendale hoping to see the fireworks in three directions. Unfortunately, the main event at the Rose Bowl was blocked by Flint Peak. So this year, I've put science to work, finding the optimum peak that fits my laziness standards and allow us to see fireworks in 4!!directions
GOOGLE MAP DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:
TO PRINT THIS OUT:
From here, we have an unobstructed view of fireworks shows at the Rose Bowl, La Crescenta elementary, Sunland-Tujunga, CBS Studio Center in Studio City and Downtown L.A. (assuming the fog doesn't roll in and screw everything up...)
So the plan is to meet at 6:00, and walk for about 2 hours. We'll pass Cerro Negro Peak and continue north towards Descanso Gardens, with about 200 feet of elevation gain each way. Then we return to our cars by 8:15, get our chairs and snacks out of our cars and plunk down on top of the peak and watch the fireworks.
Then those that want to join in for shakes at the Inn-n-out Burger at the 2 & 134 freeway intersection are welcome to join in for post-fireworks frivolity around 10 pm
(Directions to Inn-n-Out: From the top of the "mountain", take Camino San Rafael to Emerald Isle Drive. Emerald Isle Drive runs into Chevy Chase. Turn right and follow Chevy Chase for a few twisty miles and just after it passes under the 2 Freeway, turn left onto Harvey Drive. Go 1/2 mile and on your left is the Inn-n-Out burger. If you go under the 134 Freeway, you have gone too far.
BRING CHAIRS, , SNACKS, DRINKS, MAYBE MOSQUITO REPELLENT, BLANKET, WARM CLOTHES, ETC
