Topanga SP: Goat Peak and the Nazi site; & no-poison oak return trip

Approximately 10 mile loop hike, with a short out and back section to the Nazi site

Hard in sections, (a rocky staircase just before Goat Peak) and a mix of sun and shade

3 uphill sections

1100 feet elevation gain from Chautaqua Blvd. to Goat Peak, then ups and downs to lunch spot at the big oak tree

Then we drop down to Rustic Canyon (drop of 600 feet) to see the abandoned buildings of Murphy Ranch and the (spooky) old Nazi building. (FOR More history: http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/rustic-canyon-murphy-ranch-nazi-ruins/ )

From here we will NOT take the scenic but poison-oak filled lower Rustic Canyon trail back to the polo field at Will Rogers. Instead....

We take the trail back up to the ridge, (going uphill by 600 feet) and drop down to Will Rogers State Park and the polo field and return via Rivas Canyon to our cars (another 250 feet elevation gain).

AFTER HIKE TOMFOOLERY: AT REEL INN, located at Topanga Canyon Blvd and Pacific Coast Highway. Park on PCH or Topanga Canyon for free parking.

DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:

Pacific Coast Highway to Chautaqua, follow it up the hill to Sunset Blvd. and turn left. Turn right at first street called Hartzell. Then turn right at Drummond Street, and go two blocks and turn left onto Chautaqua again. Go right at the fork of Kagawa and Chautaqua, and follow Chautaqua until it ends.

Guess my comment was never posted. Thanks for a great hike Rex and for lending me my '3rd hand'. Wouldn't have been able to make it w/o the pole. Still feeling the soreness today.

Developed a blister today. Don't dare do a 10-miler. :-(. Have fun. I hope someone makes a GPS track.

I regret not going, but ~20lb pack on sunburn hurts. I may take Rex's map and find the way myself in the near future.

Liz was too exhausted and ended up sleeping most of the day.

Thanks, Irina and Larry for your concern for my toe. It was difficult to miss since I am such a Die Hard hiker! Had to heal!

Thanks, Rex, for a great hiking day. Glad I finally joined you guys. It was tough in some areas, but do-able - appreciated the pace / comradery. No blisters, bites or poison oak even! I will look forward to another!

What a great day day hiking!! Really nice friendly group. Had such a great time talking with the new friends that I made today. And so nice to visit with old friends. The trails were a good work-out but not a death-march. The trail to Goat Peak is a blast! Thanks for making this happen Rex!

Hi Yoon. Yeah I know. The trail up to Goat peak was so much fun that day and I've been keeping my eyes open for someone to list it again. I'm really excited. So sorry you're gonna miss this Yoon. I'm sure it will come up again though.

I read your driving directions. Sounds like there is ample street parking, correct?

    July 26, 2013

    • rexfrankel

it is a neighborhood, and the trailhead gets mostly use by the locals, as Will Rogers and Temescal canyon, which have lots of parking, get the most hiker use. So I think there will be enough.

I won't be able to come, but because it bothered me to see NAZI mentioned and not know what a NAZI site was, I looked it up. Here is a good post about the location. It's interesting. Read the article. In short, it was supposed to be a haven for Nazis until the war was won (by them) — but this beautiful site was designed for them by Paul Williams, LA's famous BLACK architect. (I have heard stories about Williams from his neighbors; he was brilliant.)

would love to do this hike, but I have prior commitments. Please do it again some time.

FYI the links in the e-mail announcing this hike are bad. There is a period before the "meetups.com" that shouldn't be there:
