~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is DEFINITLY A BEGINNERS HIKE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is an upside down hike, meaning that we lose our elevation on the way to Hermit falls and gain it back on the way out. This is also a loop hike, meaning that we will take one trail in and another out. We will begin our hike at the service road gate adjacent to the restrooms in the parking lot. From here we proceed down the road approx. 1/10 of a mile and continue on the “First Falls Trail” (Not to be confused with the First Falls trail on the Mt. Wilson trail) we continue down the trail approx. 1.2 miles to Hermit Falls. Along the way we will make approx. 6 stream crossings. No need to worry as the stream is flowing leisurely pace, and the water is less than 2 ft. in most places. We will see several cabins along out trip dating back to the early 1900’s. We should reach Hermit Falls in less than an hour. The trail is well maintained and clear or debris and bushes. We will break at Hermit Falls for approx 30 minutes for snacks, water and photo’s before we start our hike back to Chantry Flats. We will follow the Gabrielino Trail back to the Hoagees/Sturtevant Trail fork, and then proceed the last 6/10 mile up the service road to our starting point.
We will meet up at the REI parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. Parking is usually a REAL pain in the butt at Chantry and is $5.00 a car. An Adventure Pass is needed. Carpooling is encouraged.
ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR HIKING BOOTS AND TO CARRY AT LEAST 2 LITERS OF WATER!!!!!!
Additional items to consider would be a camera, a weather appropriate jacket, snacks, insect repellant.
MOST of the trail in and out is shaded.
