  • Sep 3, 2011 · 7:00 AM

3 Day Trip to Catalina

Sept. 3-5, 2011

Ed from our LA Hiking Meet Up Group is Event Host...this is a Sierra Club Singles event but marrieds can go and you don't have to be a member AND you don't have to be 20 or 30 !  You must get on the Sierra Club website to sign up....links at bottom

Contact Ed if you have questions (Click on his name)

Meeting Point:
Long Beach - exact locaction to be provided

A fantastic 3-day Catalina Island adventure awaits you twenty-six miles across the ocean at Camp Emerald Bay. If you like to mix endless fun activities and great people with a beautiful coastline and crystal blue water; then look no further. This trip has been occurring annually for over 15 years now and we are sure to have another great year.

Activities: Your weekend boasts a full schedule of both day and nighttime organized activities. Daytime fun includes: leader led hikes, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, volleyball, sunbathing, scavenger hunt, fun competitions, optional non sierra club sponsored scuba program and plenty more. Nighttime activities include: happy hours, karaoke, dancing lessons with expert teachers, dancing to hip tunes, games, campfire hosted by a professional musician; or just sit back and stare at all the beautiful stars.

Boat Transportation: We will be chartering two boats; that will depart from and return to Long Beach. The boats will depart on Saturday morning (3rd) and return Monday (5th) afternoon. We are still in the process of determining exact departure/return times.

Accommodations: Choose between pre-assembled platform tents (wood floor, canvas walls/roof, cots with mattress -typically holds up to two persons- no setup required) or share rustic cabins (single bed-holds up to 8 persons) with friends. Cabins are same sex. Couples can push together two cots in the platform tents. There are plenty of hot showers and restrooms as well as other creature comforts. Plug in for electrical items available in cabins.

Arrangements can be made to share a cabin with groups of friends. If you don’t have a roommate in mind; no worries; you will easily meet people on the boat ride over or just pick a place on your own.

Food: Great food prepared by an experienced caterer. Breakfast typically includes eggs, pancakes, cereal, and much more. Lunches are simple; usually sandwich bar, but varies. Dinners may include chicken one night and steak the other with veggie options; and of course dessert. You will not be disappointed.

Who should come: This trip is open to all people over the age of 21; singles and couples are welcome. The group size is typically around 300 people and the age range varies from 20s to 50s on this well attended trip. We set-up many activities to help people make new friends. Many of our participants are first timers and often come on their own.

Team Events: Typically we have some organized competitions for those of you that wish to partake as well as some other surprises.

Trip fee includes: Round trip boat transportation, camp & landing fees, platform tent w/bed and mattress or cabins (add$20), catered food (Saturday lunch through Monday lunch), activities; including kayaks, snorkeling equipment rental, hiking, dance lessons, many other organized activities.

Had a blast. Didn't know a sole on the way there. On the way home I gained some great new friends and spent quality time with top quality people. Loved it. Especially the snorkeling, dancing, late night firepit gatherings, ocean kayaking, awesome hikes, awesome staff and leaders. Oh yeah and I saw 3 Blue Whales too. So much fun, mingled with the perfect balance of relaxation /recreation time. Killer time in so many ways. :-) Erik

Thanks for Lee for posting this event! It helped save this fun trip--we were short. Hopefully he can make it the next time this trip goes. Also, thanks Ron for putting this trip together which takes a lot of time-- especially being a volunteer!

Hey can't afford $260? If someone can't afford to go for the normal rate, contact me and you can take my reservation for much less. <3

Gus... There are 2 things to this. The NO category is often filled by people who originally said YES and something comes up where they have to change the RSVP to NO, and the NO slot gets filled up. Those who say NO from the gitgo who never intended to go in the first place...I agree with you...why bother...who cares. Thanks for your comments

    September 1, 2011

  • Gus M

Why are so many people commenting their 'no' attendance. Like we need to know you not going. Who cares. Hell yeah! I'm going. Too blunt? Oops.

This time, we'll probably go on Sunday to the store since we arrive at Catalina on Saturday. I think with the store option and picking what you want to eat, you'll be ok.

    July 22, 2011

  • edward

There's salad bars during lunch & dinner.
I doubt the pancakes are vegan.
Basically it is a buffet where you pick and choose what you eat.
I think you may have a hard time picking on what you eat. For instance, they'll have cookies there, but they may not be vegan.
On Saturday, we hike to the isthmus which has a store, so if you are unhappy with the food options, you can buy food there.

    July 22, 2011

  • Jennifer H.

Pancakes are ok if they are made vegan which I think is probably unlikely under these circumstances. I don't eat any eggs, dairy etc - basically no animal products. Is there any way to find out for sure what will be available? I really want to come but if I am just hungry all weekend it won't really be fun for me.

    July 21, 2011

  • edward

Oh there are many vegeterian options. WIth vegan that is more restrictive on what you eat.
Do you eat pancakes? I know it may not be a vegan options.

    July 21, 2011

  • Jennifer H.

Does anyone know the situation with food? The description says "veggie" options. I don't know what "veggie" means but I'm a vegan. The sample breakfast menu did not list any vegan options. I really want to go but I don't want to be hungry all weekend. Does anyone have any more info on this?

Ed, I've been trying to pay by check however, the system does not seem to be set up to accept them... so where do I send in my check???? I'm trying to take advantage of the lower fee, however, I do not wish to use paypal due to past issues...

oops exact wording: "Your Paypal payment was not verified. The webmaster has been informed of the problem and will contact you once this issue is resolved."

maybe they want $20 more... maybe membership is free if i pay the extra $20 for nonmember for trip? just not clear...

ok this is what happened... we have the opty 2 join 4 free prior 2 trip. trip is less expensive as a member. so i joined. then tried 2 RSVP & it said i needed 2 b approved. 2day finally get email saying i'm approved. so,... i go back 2 SC site, log in, & try 2 pay w paypal. i choose the tent option as a member, for $240. the paypal pmt DOES go thru. BUT then i get notification on SC RSVP page that says that the paypal pymt did not go thru to SC & "webmaster has been notified" - ??

    July 13, 2011

  • Lee Z.

They say you must join to make a reservation but do not require any money. Therefore you are not technically joining the Sierra Club per se. But I will wait for Eds answer. I have been a member of SC for 30 years and never heard of a requirement to join to go on SC events

ummmm i tried to RSVP, and it made me join Sierra Club (fine), and then it said that i have to wait to be approved for the trip...!?!? and wouldn't let me pay. just letting you know. that was two days ago and i'm still "waiting for approval" on the SC website...

    July 12, 2011

  • edward

That is why I stay in the tents. There's enough tents there so you can get your own.
JULY 15TH IS THE LAST DAY TO GET THE DISCOUNT!

Rats....now I can't go...family business...someone is getting married up in the Sacramento, and I gotta attend....next year for sure.

    May 27, 2011

  • edward

The cabins have 5-7 others (same sex) in it. If you want privacy, get the tents.

    May 7, 2011

  • sondra

I LOVE Sharing with the SAME SEX!

    April 21, 2011

  • edward

I'd recommend the platform tents--can get your own. With the cabins, you share with others of the SAME sex i.e. males or females.

    April 20, 2011

  • edward

With Catalina, you can do your OWN thing or join in the many social activities (at night), hikes, water sports, etc
