THIS MOTHER'S DAY: 2 HIKES FROM THE SAME STARTING PLACE:

We'll first go south, explore Franklin Canyon's shady trails above Beverly Hills, then go north over the hill to the TreePeople/Coldwater Canyon park and then Fryman canyon park.

ITINERARY: SUNDAY MAY 8, 2011

10 AM TO 1 PM--HIKE AT FRANKLIN CANYON, ITS SHADY HILLSIDE TRAILS AND AROUND THE LAKE

1 PM: LUNCH in the grassy area below the Sooky Goldman nature center, near our cars (so folks can bail out on the afternoon hike, if they want...or join us for the second hike if they didn't do the first one.)

1:30--LEAVE THE UPPER FRANKLIN CANYON PARKING LOT, TAKE THE TRAIL UP OVER MULHOLLAND DRIVE, TO TREEPEOPLE, AND ALL THE WAY TO FRYMAN CANYON AND THE "RAINFOREST", CONTINUING TO THE BETTY DEARING TRAILHEAD AT MULHOLLAND OVERLOOKING UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

5-ish: RETURN TO OUR CARS,

THEN GO HAVE DINNER WITH YOUR MOTHER---IT'S MOTHER'S DAY...

--------------------

DISTANCE: I'm bad at this, so I'll say somewhere between 6 and 10 miles.

DIFFICULTY: Franklin canyon is easy to moderate. The trail from Treepeople to Fryman canyon is civilized but there's more ups and downs.

BRING: 2 quarts of water, hat, sunscreen, comfortable hiking shoes. There are restrooms and drinking water available at 2 places in Franklin Canyon and at the TreePeople center.

----------------------------------------

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:

FROM THE VALLEY: Take Coldwater Canyon south to Mulholland. At this confusing intersection, go straight through onto Franklin canyon drive. Go about a half mile downhill on this narrow road, and after leaving the residential portion of the street, there will be a video-activated stop sign. Be careful, it gives out $100 tickets for rolling stops. Turn left here, into the huge dirt parking lot, which is for the Sooky Goldman nature center. We will meet at the south end of the lot. If you continue south on the road and see the lake, you have gone too far.

FROM BEVERLY HILLS:

Take Coldwater Canyon north from Sunset Blvd. Go north all the way to Mulholland Drive and turn left onto Franklin canyon drive. Then follow this narrow road south, turning left at the video-stop sign, into the dirt parking lot.
