Needs a location
Rock-Hopping and checking out the proposed 1000-acre Rio Dulce Ranch addition to Vasquez Rocks County Park
We will explore the trails in the upper rocks area on the west side of Vasquez rocks park, elevation gain about 100 feet, then follow the creek via the Pacific Crest trail (that's 3 miles to the freeway underpass--watch out for the millions of tadpoles!), then cross under the freeway and follow the PC trail up the hill (going up 600 feet) and get close to the "head" rocks (AKA "Three Sister's Rocks"), and maybe climb them if we are bold (that's a total of 6 miles--3 each way). After re-crossing under the freeway, we return to our cars (another 1 mile).
DISTANCE: 10 miles. Difficulty: medium.
AS ALWAYS: BRING PLENTY OF WATER, MUNCHIES, A HAT, SUNSCREEN, COMFY HIKING SHOES, HIKING POLES, GPS, DESKS, FAX MACHINES, OTHER DISTRACTIONS...
DIRECTIONS: take 14 Freeway north of the San Fernando Valley, through the Santa Clarita area to the Agua Dulce road offramp. Turn right, go under freeway north on Agua Dulce for 2 miles, and it will turn right (east) becoming Escondido Canyon Road. In a mile you will see the entrance to Vasquez rocks park. We will meet in the first dirt parking lot past the ranger's trailer.

BACKGROUND: This purchase is part of the creation of a circle of parks around the City of Santa Clarita, best known as the home to the Magic Mountain amusement park, which has been filling up with tract housing since the 1970's and has threatened to become just another part of L.A.'s sprawl.
This 1000 acre purchase will also help complete the link for the park connection between the two halves of the Angeles National Forest.
[Map (http://mrca.ca.gov/pdf/attachment2058_Map.pdf)] [Staff Report (http://mrca.ca.gov/pdf/attachment2058_Staff%20Report.pdf)]
Background: Rio Dulce is a 1,017 acre holding of 20 lots, located east of Agua Dulce Road south of State Route 14. Staff participated in a Bay Area auction to purchase the parcels in 2007. MRCA was outbid and the parcels were purchased by Nominn, LLC. The situation has changed and now both the Riverside Land Conservancy (RLC) and the City of Santa Clarita are negotiating with Nominn, LLC to acquire the parcels. MRCA would be the likely fee owner. RLC is the lead agency on the acquisition. They are working on a package to acquire the Nominn parcels plus 1,100 adjacent acres in Agua Dulce Canyon.
