Needs a location
This is a strenuous hike of 14 miles with an elevation gain of more than 4,000 feet above Altadena and Sierra Madre through scenic sections of the Angeles Crest closed to hikers since the Station Fire nearly two years ago. Sunset Ridge and the Idlehour Trail recently re-opened and we will link them via Flores Canyon, Castle Canyon and Inspiration Point. The middle section of the hike, Idlehour Trail across the middle reaches of Eaton Canyon, is one of the most remote sections of the front range. We will ascend via the Sunset Ridge Trail above Millard Canyon and descend from the Idlehour Trail via the Mt. Wilson Toll Road and Henninger Flats to Eaton Canyon with a car shuttle of several miles between our departure and return points.
Unless you recently have hiked at least 10 miles with an elevation gain of at least 3,000 feet do NOT sign up for this hike. Expect a steady pace (neither "slow poke" nor fast) with breaks at Echo Mountain, Inspiration Point, Idlehour Camp and Henninger Flats. Bring water and pack a lunch. Sunscreen and hats are strongly advised as much of the trail is exposed and we will be hiking for 7 or 8 hours. The last time I hiked the Idlehour Trail from Inspiration Point to the Mt. Wilson Toll Road, shortly after the Station Fire, sections of the trail were in poor condition and required scrambling on all fours along canyonsides. If you have any issues with narrow trails or heights, do NOT sign up for this hike.
We will meet at 8:30 am near the entrance/exit for the Mt. Wilson Toll Road and then shuttle in half of our vehicles several miles west to the start of the Sunset Ridge trail.
Exit I-210 at Altadena Drive, two exits east of Lake Avenue, turn left under the freeway at the bottom of the ramp, and proceed 2.9 miles north (toward the mountains). Turn right onto Crescent Drive--just past the entrance to Mendocino Lane on the left--and go 0.1 mile to the intersection of Crescent and Pinecrest Drive. Park on Crescent. (Parking on Pinehurst is prohibited. You will be ticketed if you park there.)
If you are coming from the LA Basin and the San Fernando Valley and would like to carpool from near the intersection of the I-5, Los Feliz Blvd. and Riverside Drive at 8:00 am, let me know in advance.
