Hike Organizer: Paul Kemp
Location: Angeles National Forest
Hike Difficulty: Moderate, 6/10 (not for beginners)
Distance: 7 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 1,500 feet (total)
Time: 5 hours
INTRODUCTION: This Trail leaves the Angeles Crest at Chilau and descends steep slopes of chaparral, spruce, and pine into the shaded bowels of Devils Canyon. Here, under a green canopy of alder and willow, alongside deep pools and miniature waterfalls, the hiker can find solitude on a days outing or overnight backpack, and relive a part of the mountains as they once were.
HIKE DESCRIPTION: The well-maintained trail loses no time in descending the steep hillsides alternately through stands of big-cone spruce on shady north faces and dense chaparral on sunnier slopes. About halfway down the trail meets a small tributary creek and then follows it to the main canyon. At trails end, on a shaded bench on the right, well above the stream, is a wilderness camping area.
DIRECTIONS: A prominent sign marks the Devils Canyon trailhead on the Angeles Crest Highway 27 miles from La Canada and about 200 yards before you reach the Chilao Visitor Centre turnoff. Leave your car in the large parking area on the left (west) side of the road directly across from the trailhead.
CARPOOL LOCATION: In La Canada/Flintridge the carpool meeting point is on Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) just north of the 210 Freeway on the right hand side at Chehalem Road. Turn right on Milmada and then an immediate left on the slip road, which is still ACH, Chahalem is the next street up. The meeting time is 8.0.
For those driving from the east I will be meeting at Monrovia Park 'n' Ride on Myrtle Avenue just south of the 210 Freeway, leaving promptly at 7.30.
