BNC - Century Ride Training Series

Have you ever thought about doing a century ride? This can be the year that you accomplish that goal. During the forthcoming months a series of bike rides will be scheduled for the purpose of training for the ultimate ride, The Santa Barbara 100 (SB100), a 100-mile bicycle ride from the San Fernando Valley to Santa Barbara. It will be an epic day ride and triumph!

On February 14th the Bike Night Cardio Club will host a Q and A session. This is a good time to meet some of the members that have done century rides and ask questions before the first training ride on February 21st. We will be doing a short ride so bring your bike and start riding. The info below pertains to the training rides and some dates are To Be Announced (TBA).

The Century Ride Training Series (CRTS) will consist of several weekend bike rides ranging from 30 miles to 80-miles and the difficulty will increase from ride to ride. Some of the training rides will incorporate sections of the SB100 route so you will have the opportunity to practice on some of the more difficult parts and to become familiar with the route.

There will be weekly Bike Night Cardio rides (Thursdays, 20 to 30 miles) which will help improve endurance, build strength, and maintain our pedal-power legs. In addition to doing the scheduled training rides you must also do the weekly recommended miles; either with the group or on your own. Mixing in some cross training (hiking, trail running, etc.) will also help build leg strength and endurance.

Riders that are interested in completing a century ride for the first time are encourage to do all the weekend rides, all the weekday rides, the suggested weekly miles, and ride as often as possible between now and the SB100. Remember to ride your bike, ride your bike, and after you finish riding your bike, ride your bike some more. The more you ride the more enjoyable the SB100 will be. There will be other advance bike rides and fun event rides scheduled between the CRTS rides, keep an eye out.

Around the midway point (Ride #4) you must show that you have been doing the recommended weekly miles. Any participant that begins to fall to far back at this point will likely not be ready for the SB100.

Some routes will include bailout points or riders can turn around at any time. If an unforeseen incident occurs (flat tire, etc.) we'll regroup and help out. No Rider Left Behind. However, riders must be prepared to deal with returning home on their own if necessary (carry a cell phone).
