INTRODUCTION: The Greek freighter SS Dominator ran aground at Palos Verdes point in 1961 while lost in fog. For two days the Coast Guard and tugboats attempted to refloat her, but heavy seas and high winds only forced her higher onto the rocks. After two days the crew abandoned ship. Nowadays the rusted hulk of this shipwreck is scattered along a half mile of the Palos Verdes shoreline, and serves as a point of interest for hikers and kayakers alike.
HIKE DESCRIPTION: Join me for a delightful hike along beautiful, rugged coastline with tide pools to a shipwreck. It is rumored that the old wreck is guarded by an enormous sea monster (see above photograph), bad-tempered and very hideous, sort of a cross between a crab and a jellyfish, so bring along your best spears and catapults. There should be ample street parking near the trailhead, although carpooling is recommended.
Most of the hike will be on rocky shoreline so it may be slow-going and challenging for those who are not familiar with rock- and boulder-hopping. Wear sturdy shoes or boots, preferably the lug-soled variety.
WHAT TO BRING: Sunglasses, sunblock, hat, drinking water, sturdy footwear, snacks, lunch to eat at the shipwreck, swimwear if you wish to go for a swim.
