Ferris and Thelma lead the annual New Year's Day hike to Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains.
We hike a 6-mile loop trail with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet and panoramic views from Ventura to Los Angeles. Most of the trail is exposed to the sun. Bring a hat or sunscreen as well as water and pack a lunch. The hike will end by 2 p.m., but it will take an hour or more for most of us to drive back into town.
NOT FOR BEGINNERS.
Meet at the Circle X Ranch Office 1 mile west of the trailhead parking lot between 9:40 and 9:50 a.m. Look for a white Volvo sedan. The Circle X Ranch Office has the only public restroom in the area and is easier to find than the gravel parking lot at the trailhead. Or you can join us at the trailhead parking lot at 10 a.m. (Be sure you find the parking lot closest to the Circle X and the ocean, not the parking lot 1/2 mile farther east.)
From Los Angeles: Take PCH north about 20 miles past Malibu and 2 miles past Leo Carrillo Beach Park to Yerba Buena Road, just beyond Neptune's Net roadhouse. Follow Yerba Buena about 6 1/2 miles up into the mountains to the Circle X Ranch Office, clearly visible on the right side of the road.
From Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley: Take I-101 west to Westlake Village. Exit at Westlake Blvd. and proceed south (into the Santa Monica Mountains) about 5 miles. Turn right onto Muhlholland Highway and proceed west about 3 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon Road and proceed 5 1/2 miles to the Circle X Ranch Office (or 4 1/2 miles to the trailhead parking lot).
CARPOOLING IS ENCOURAGED for those who are not familiar with the long, winding roads that lead to the Circle X Ranch and the trailhead. Every year, at least one newbie gets lost on the drive and misses the hike.
Carpool from Santa Monica: Hikers who want to carpool from West LA should meet at 9 a.m. on the south side of Temescal Canyon Road about 100 yards east of the intersection with PCH. Don't be late. It takes nearly an hour to reach the Circle X Ranch Office. Post a note if you want to meet there to coordinate with other interested parties.
Carpool from Hollywood: Meet me at Pimai Restaurant on the southeast corner of the intersection of Franklin Ave. and Canyon Drive, across the street from Gelson's Market at 8:20 a.m. Don't be late. We will depart at 8:25 with or without you.
My mobile number is[masked], but don't count on being able to reach me in the mountains.
Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it.
