Awesome Evening Workout Hike!!!

Tongva Peak & Mt. Thom – Moderate/Advanced to Advanced Nite Hike
A Body, Mind and Spirit Hike to challenge you inner and outer self.
(this is not for beginners, but it sure is a lot of fun)
4.25mi 2100ft to 4.5 mi 2500ft

NOTE: Meeting location at Brand Library in Glendale. And Meeting time 6:30 with 6:45 Depart.

Join us for a great evening workout to Tongva Peak & Mt. Thom in the Verdugo Mountains starting from the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale. The views of the city lights are great and it sure beats a boring gym. Chances are you'll get a much better workout too.

In this photo we will roughly be starting in the lower right corner going diagonally up.

Not gonna lie. This is STEEP. Tongva is elevation 2656 and the parking lot it located at 800 ft in elevation. Total elevation change during hike 2100ft to 2500ft elevation change

This focuses on steep uphill to really push yourself.

To Compare:

• Fryman 3 miles (loop) Elevation change: 463 ft

• Runyon 3.25 miles (loop) 594 ft

• Franklin Cyn Hastian loop 2.7 miles, 617ft

• Griffith Ferndell to Mt Hollywood approx (the easy way) 4 1/4 mi 1100ft elevation.

So this challenges you to twice the elevation as basic Ferndell or Merry Go Round, in the same distance.

The hope is:

Since we are all at different fitness levels some of us will likely keep a faster pace than others. We'll all try to push ourselves a bit to get our heart rate up and then catch our breath and re-group at the junctions and tops. But we will all encourage everybody to succeed.

Difficulty: VERY ADVANCED

You already need to be very well conditioned for this workout. This hike will take the a Griffith workout to the next level. We'll be doing a couple of very long and steep inclines. This is not a slow paced "social hike."

The Plan:

We'll meet by the bench outside the music studio at the north end of the Brand Library building at about 6:30 PM, do some stretching and introductions etc. and get started heading up the trail at no later than 6:45PM

At the peak we'll catch our breath for a few minutes and enjoy the city view before heading towards Mt Thom. There we may get some pix looking south over all of LA and going down a steep trail back to the Brand Library.

Distance & Elevation Gain:
About 4 1/2 miles and about 2,500 ft or so cumulative elevation gain/loss.

Time Required:
About 2 hours or so.

What To Bring:
- Headlamp (best) or flashlight and spare batteries (important)
- Trail running shoes or flexible hiking booths with plenty of traction (important)
- Hydration system (best) or bottle with water or Gatorade etc.
- Your cell phone
- Layered clothing including a light wind breaker jacket

Parking:
You can park at the Brand Library (until 10 PM). We will be done way before that. There is plenty of (free) parking available.
