Rex's Mystery rock-scrambling Hike to a lot of rocks and caves

MOST IMPORTANT, BUT CRYPTIC DETAILS:

DIFFICULTY: a bit hard, there will be some rock scrambling (requiring use of your hands, but not ropes). There is some scratchy brush. WE MIGHT BE OUT PAST SUNSET, SO BRING A FLASHLIGHT.

--ALSO, bring leather gloves to keep your hands in one piece.

--PHOTOGENIC? Hell yes! EXTREMELY SCENIC!!

--We will take a fire road to the top of Calabasas Peak, then explore the rocks and caves at the top, and take the difficult way down the rocks to our cars

--DISTANCE: 3 miles round trip

--ELEVATION GAIN: 850 feet in one mile. We will stop a lot to rest if I feel merciful

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WEATHER: forecast: 67 degrees and sunny  http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/USCA0149

AS USUAL: BRING A CAMERA---You will understand why. BRING 2 LITERS OF WATER, A HAT, SUNSCREEN, COMFORTABLE BUT GRIPPY SHOES, SNACKS, OREO COOKIES

------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS TO PARKING AREA FROM SAN FERNANDO VALLEY:

Take the 101 freeway to the Woodland Hills area, and take the offramp to the SOUTHBOUND Topanga canyon Blvd.

In a mile, turn right onto Mulholland Drive. In a mile or so, you turn left onto Mulholland Highway. If you pass a Gelson's market shopping center, you took the correct turn.

Follow Mulholland Highway several more miles over the summit, then in a little more than a mile is Stunt Road. Turn left onto Stunt road and go 1 mile. PARK NEAR TRAIL CROSSING SIGN.

Lots of fun yet again, Rex. Thank you for sharing your love of rocks and caves with us, and always lending a helping hand when needed - you rock (pun intended). Eclectic group of really nice people, and a lovely sunset. Made the gridlock both ways worth it.

Love rock scrambling. But also have a stupid fear of heights when there are steep drops...how's the fear factor on this one?

    November 29

    • rexfrankel

At All the spots where there is a drop there is a parallel trail at the base of the rocks.
