BOUQUET CANYON FALLS AND BEE PEAK
Climb a peak, see Bouquet reservoir, then lounge in and around the waterfalls with your favorite beverages and snacks before you go see the fireworks (such as the Echo Mountain night hike at 6:15)!
WHEN: 11 AM TO 3 OR 4 PM
DIFFICULTY: the hike up to Bee Peak is medium, or if you just want to splash around in the falls, then it's easy.
Here's a hike that Meetup has never done. I don't know why, 'cause the falls are beautiful.
For those that loved climbing down the stairway of falls with me a few months back at the Grotto in the Santa Monica Mountains, Bouquet Falls are very similar. They are located along the roadside on Bouquet Canyon road in the north part of the Angeles National Forest, one mile south of the dam for Bouquet Canyon reservoir.
The falls flow year round because of the overflow from the reservoir, which stores L.A. City's water supply which was swiped years ago from the Owens Valley and Mammoth Lakes areas 300 mile north of L.A.
We will first take the Quarry Road jeep trail (Forest Service road 6N19) up to the top of Bee Peak, elevation gain 1300 feet in 2 1/2 miles and Have lunch, then turn around and hit the waterfalls.
The Falls used to be a national forest campsite, but it and all the others along Bouquet canyon road have been closed for a while, and don't appear on their maps anymore.
Here are lots of photos and maps:
BRING COMFORTABLE HIKING SHOES; EXPECT TO GET THEM WET. ALSO, LOTS OF WATER, LUNCH, SUNSCREEN, HAT, GERN BLANSTON REPELLENT.
PARKING: along Bouquet Canyon road between the Quarry Road sign and further north. ADVENTURE PASS IS REQUIRED--THEY COST $5 AT SPORTING GOODS STORES AND RANGER STATIONS. (If you don't have one, the rangers will give you a warning ticket to pay the $5, however, repeat violators get a $100 ticket)
DIRECTIONS: North of L.A., take the 5 freeway to the 14 freeway going towards Palmdale. Get off at the Sand Canyon offramp and go north 2 miles. It goes up over a hill then drops down to Sierra Highway. Turn right and a very short distance ahead is Vasquez canyon road, and you can only turn left here. Follow Vasquez to the west and in a few miles it ends at Bouquet Canyon road--turn right and go north up the winding road for about 10 miles. You should see a Quarry Road sign. PARK HERE OR ANYWHERE IN THE HALF MILE TO THE NORTH. If you keep going north you will see a "The Falls" sign, and then a mile north, you'll see the Bouquet reservoir. TURN AROUND! I WILL BE PARKED AT QUARRY ROAD WITH A "MEETUP" SIGN. WE WILL WAIT UNTIL 11:15 THEN GET STARTED.
