Garden of the Gods and Santa Susana Pass hike and rock play

THE DETAILS: 6 mile hike with rock play at two off-trail play areas; 500 feet elevation gain

DETAILS FOR PEOPLE WHO REALLY LIKE DETAILS: We will start at Garden of the Gods park (site of the Iverson movie ranch where lots of shoot em up westerns were filmed), and climb a few boulders. Then we will cross Santa Susana Pass Road and enter the State Park onto the El Camino Nuevo trail. I might point out the Manson Family Cave for those who remember the 1960's. (As someone once told me, "if you remember the '60s, you weren't there"). Anyway...

We turn left at the Williams trail, then go right onto the Mattingly trail and climb the enticing crestline of rocks parallel to the trail. We soon reach the upper pond trail and then Lilac Lane

Then we return via the Lilac Road east side trail to Santa Susana Pass Road, back onto the El Camino Nuevo trail and cut back through the Garden of the Gods to our cars and skateboards.

Directions: Garden of the Gods is located in Chatsworth on Redmesa Drive/Road near the intersection of Santa Susana Pass Road and Topanga Canyon Blvd. (The street sign calls it Redmesa Drive. Google maps calls it Redmesa Road. SAME ROAD!) RedMesa turns north off Santa Susana Pass Road approximately 2,000 feet west of Topanga Canyon Blvd. The 118 Freeway/Topanga Canyon Blvd. interchange is less than one half mile from the site.

Parking: Street parking is available on Redmesa. BRING THREE LITERS OF WATER, SNACKS, HIKING SHOES, A HAT, etc
