DETAILS OF THE HIKE---7 miles each way:
Parking lot is at 8300 feet. We climb 1 1/2 miles to summit of Mt. Pinos which is at 8800 feet.
Then we go west 1 mile dropping down 200 feet then back up to the 8800 foot summit of Sawmill Mountain.
Next we go 1 mile to hit Grouse Mountain which summits at 8582 feet.
Then we continue west via the saddle at Puerto del Suelo which is at 7600 feet, then climb up to Cerro Noroeste (also called Mt. Abel) which summits at 8243 feet and has the usual forest service pit toilets.
Then we return the same way we came, AND EXPECT TO REACH THE PARKING LOT AT 8 PM, WHERE WE CAN JOIN A STAR-GAZING PARTY LED BY OTHER MEETUP GROUPS, OR SPLIT TO HAVE DINNER IN FRAZIER PARK.
MAP TO THE HIKE: HERE IS A ZOOMABLE MAP, INCLUDING AERIAL AND TOPOGRAPHIC MAP, WITH THE HIKE AND DRIVING ROUTE LAID OUT: http://preview.tinyurl.com/4xlu954
Directions: From Los Angeles travel about 60 miles north on Interstate 5. After passing the Gorman exit (McDonald's and Carl's Jr. junk food places), Take the Exit for Frazier Mountain Park Road. Turn left and take Frazier Mountain Park Road for 7.1 miles. The name of the road changes to Cuddy Valley Rd at this point and you will continue 5 more miles. (DO NOT take the road to the left called Lockwood Valley road!) In 5 or so miles you will come to an intersection with arrows that point to the right for Pine Mountain Club. Do not go this way, instead bear to the left onto Mount Pinos Road instead. Follow Mt Pinos road up the mountain another 8 miles or so until it ends at the parking lot for the "Mt. Pinos Nordic Base".
NOTE----PLEASE PARK ALONG THE ROAD BEFORE THE BIG PARKING LOT--AS THERE IS AN ASTRONOMY-WATCHERS EVENT THAT PLANS ON SETTING UP TELESCOPES IN THE LOT.
A NATIONAL FOREST ADVENTURE PASS IS REQUIRED TO PARK--THEY COST $5 FOR ONE DAY OR $30 FOR A YEAR.YOU CAN BUY THEM AT SPORTING GOODS STORES, RANGER STATIONS, AND USUALLY AT MARKETS NEAR THE FOREST.
