Details

The State of California is now the landowner of the Ballona Wetlands, after a 25 year battle with development proposals.

The states' managers want to shut the public out of the Ballona Wetlands for the next ten years while they reconfigure the land to be flooded with ocean water 24-7, favoring fish habitat to the exclusion of mammals, frogs, lizards, wildflowers and butterflies. So what is now a balanced and biodiverse ecosystem would be converted into a mono-culture. The proposal has spurred the filing of 4 lawsuits by local groups. The hearing is by the State's Coastal Conservancy which is being requested to grant $2.2 million for more studies of the current controversial plans.

Locals have proposed a plan that accomplishes the restoration in one year, with the local community brought back into the planning process.
