Urban Hill Hike with Stairs in Highland Park; Level: Moderate+
Details
Come join us for a great workout, for meeting new people and for exploring unique neighborhoods to do an urban hill hike in Highland Park.
We will meet by Garvanza Park and climb numerous hills and a few stair cases in some of the nicer parts of Highland Park including Garvanza and Mt. Angelus. We'll make a short excursion to the La Prada St. to check out the historic newspaper headlines on the sidewalk (but they are pretty covered in moss). Along the way we'll get to enjoy beautiful views of different areas as well as both historic and modern homes.
LEVEL: Intermediate Plus for speed and some of the inclines, otherwise moderate. While we love to socialize and we do encourage newcomers, please note that moderate+ cardio fitness and walking speed are required.
LENGTH: 6.3 miles , 1150 ft gain, 4 staircases up, 2 down +/- 2 1/2 hours.
SPEED: Intermediate Plus; our speed is faster than most moderate hikes, but well below advanced. We'll take short breaks at top of the stairs and the steepest hills to re-group. There will be no sweep; bring a phone for navigation just in case you want to leave early.
BRING: Workout outfit and exercise shoes (no hiking shoes are needed) sunscreen, well-charged phone and water.
MEETING SPOT: We will meet at 9.30am for introductions and take off sharply at 9.35am. (If you are a few minutes late meet us at the corner of Meridian St. and Lewis St. )
PARKING: Free, unlimited street parking.
RESTROOMS: There are none till towards the end. Stop at one of the businesses on York before arriving, if needed.
WEATHER: Predicted rain will cancel, but some chance of sprinklers will not.
PLEASE NO CRASHING: Urban hikes do not work well with large groups, so, unfortunately, I have the limit the group size. I "overbook" the events in anticipation of last-minute dropouts, so you cannot count on those spots to be available. The wait list, if needed, generally clears automatically and in order when spots open up, but people with pictures (LA Hiking Group rule) and good attendance records may get priority.
LIABILITY: The organizer is an unpaid and untrained volunteer. By joining this event each member accepts full responsibility for knowing their limits, for all injuries and health issues, assessing risks, for material losses and for getting lost. Each member agrees to make their guests aware of this, also, and release the host from all liability.
