Sunset Hike at Beaudry Loop with Optional Refreshment Sharing! Level: Moderate+
Details
Come join us for one of our favorite local mountain hikes: the Beaudry Loop, starting in Glendale!
This beautiful trail is one of the highest rated hikes on AllTrails. We will take the steeper South route with panoramic views of the city up to the double peaks: Mount Thom and Tongva. At Tongva, next to the radio towers, there is a nice lookout point where we will stop for a get-together to enjoy the gorgeous sunset views and to share snacks and drinks for an hour or so. (If some people want to break off and just do the hike you are welcome to do so.) After that we will take the tree-lined North route down. The path is a wide fire road making socializing easy and night hiking safe.
LEVEL: Intermediate Plus for speed. The incline going clockwise is somewhat steep, but not extreme. We are a friendly group that loves to socialize and encourages newcomers, but please note that moderate+ level of cardio fitness and walking speed are required.
LENGTH: 5.9 miles, 1500 ft elevation gain. <2 1/4h moving time, and an hour or so for the optional social part.
SPEED: c. 21-22 min/mile going up. This is faster than most moderate hikes, but below advanced ones. We will make several one minute stops going up. The plan is to stay together as a group, but there is no sweep and the hike finishes after dark, so make sure that the posted speed is suitable for you.
If you do end up taking longer than the main group, no problem, just meet us at the lookout point and we'll all come down together. The route doesn't have many turns, see map in the pictures.
BRING: Hiking shoes and water. Snack and/or drinks to share (optional). Flashlight for the last part of the hike. Red color is preferred to save our night vision, green is OK, too. Headlamps, if any, need to point down. Poles are not needed unless you have a preference to have them on moderate hikes.
DOGS: I allow well-behaved, strong dogs, but the area has a lot of coyotes, so maybe the small ones should stay home and you take all responsibility for the big ones, too!
Please note that we do not wait for dogs.
MEETING POINT: We meet for introductions at 6.00pm and we take off at 6.05pm sharp. (If you are late and attempt to catch us we are taking the South route (stay left) at the split c. 1/4 mile from the start, map is posted)
ALERT: Don't fully trust the Meetup GPS link. On rare occasions, depending on your phone and app, it can lead people slightly off!
RESTROOMS: none.
PARKING: Street parking in a residential neighborhood. Parking is usually pretty easy. There is additional parking on J Lee Circle, if needed.
LIABILITY: The organizer is an untrained and unpaid volunteer. By joining this event each member accepts full responsibility for knowing their limits, for injuries and health issues, for material losses, assessing all risks and for getting lost. Each member shall make their guests aware of these policies, also, and release the host from all liability.
