Hike the Mesa on the South Slope of Saddle Peak in Malibu

Saturday, October 15th from 2 to 5 pm.

Followed by dinner afterward at Froggy's restaurant (specialty: seafood and Mexican) in Topanga, 1105 N Topanga Canyon Road, 1 mile north of the intersection of Topanga canyon and Old Topanga Road. Please park in the rear of the place, not on Topanga canyon Blvd, if possible

Threatened with development for years, the 1255 acre mesa above the famous Big Rock Mesa landslide was bought in 2002 by an offshoot of the Santa Monica Mountains conservancy (known as the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority).

Known mostly by the locals, Tuna Canyon park's trails are wide fire-roads and the park features 360 degree views of the ocean, L.A. basin and Saddle Peak.

THE HIKE: goes down 700 feet, then back up 700 feet.

DIRECTIONS:the best way to get here is to take Topanga Canyon Blvd to the small business district at Fernwood Pacific drive. Follow this twisty road (Fernwood Pacific) several miles up to the top of the mountain, and the name will change to Tuna Canyon road. You will reach a fork. The right fork becomes Saddle Peak road. DO NOT TAKE THE RIGHT FORK. The left fork stays Tuna Canyon rd and you will start going downhill towards the beach for a mile to the trailhead. Soon you will pass Las Flores Heights Road, a dirt road. Keep going and park on your right. Google maps call the trail "Big Rock Mtwy".

TO GET TO FROGGY'S: Drive all the way back to Topanga Canyon Blvd, and go north 2 miles and you will see Froggy's on the left (west) side at 1105 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd.
