HIKE TO DEEP CREEK HOT SPRINGS

PLAY IN THE POOLS, AND HIKE AROUND

UPSTREAM IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT.

120 MILES FROM L.A.—CONSIDERED THE BEST NATURAL HOT SPRINGS IN THE L.A. AREA

There are several hot pools in the rock formations, plus a cooler creek flowing below.

ITINERARY:

My plan: leave L.A. at 8 am. Take the 10 freeway east all the way to Ontario. Then take the 15 freeway north over the Cajon Pass (which leads to Las Vegas). The first town you see is Hesperia. I will get to the Main Street turnoff in Hesperia by 10 am.

10 AM: WE WILL MEET AT THE BURGER KING AT THE MAIN STREET OFFRAMP TO CAR-CONVOY FROM HERE, SO NO ONE GETS LOST. (There are a Denny’s, In-N-Out Burger, Jack in the Box and Starbucks at the same corner.

We will continue 14 miles east on Main street, which changes names to Rock Springs and later to Roundup way. Then we turn right (South) onto the unpaved Bowen Ranch road for between 5 and 7 miles, and Bowen Ranch is where we park our cars. (As it is private property, we pay $5 a person to park,, which is well-worth it since the alternative is a 6 mile walk from the free forest service lot near Lake Silverwood). Then we walk down the sometimes steep trail for 2 miles, wade across the creek and we are there by about 11:30.

DEEP CREEK HAS A LIBERAL CLOTHING POLICY, SO YOU MIGHT SEE NUDE PEOPLE. WE, HOWEVER, WILL KEEP TO OUR SWIM-WEAR. (Sorry, to those who wanted to see me in the buff….)

STUFF TO BRING: Plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, flashlight, comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, lunch and snacks.

I will email my cell phone # and other info to folks on Saturday October 22nd.

NOON TO 4:30: We will bathe and swim, ignore the nudists, and for those that can't stand to enjoy the hot water, we will also hike up the creek for an hour or so.

DEPARTURE FROM THE SPRINGS: Since sunset is at 6:10 pm, we will start back up the trail at 4:30 at the latest, so we are back to our cars before it gets dark.

------------------------------------------------

SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS AFTER LEAVING THE 15 FREEWAY: Go east 7 ½ miles, and the road forks. Take the straight ahead fork (still going east) onto Rock Springs Road for 2 ½ miles. The name changes to Roundup Way. Continue 4 ¼ miles on Roundup (last 1 ½ miles is unpaved dirt road) and turn right onto Bowen Ranch road. Turn right (south) on the unpaved Bowen Ranch Road, go between 5 and 7 miles. Stay on the wide dirt road all the way until you see the sign for Bown Ranch and Deep Creel Hot Springs. Get to Bowen Ranch and pay $5 per person parking fee by 10:30 or 10:45 and start walking down the 2 mile trail to the springs.

Although the last 7 miles to Bowen Ranch involves unpaved desert roads, the area has many residents and the roads are frequently traveled. So don't worry about getting stranded and having your bones bleach white before help arrives.

ELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: We park at 4400 feet at Bowen Ranch and the trail drops 800 feet down to the hot springs. The last half mile of the trail is slippery, so bring really-grippy hiking shoes.

ZOOMABLE STREET AND TOPO MAP TO THE HOT SPRINGS: "A" is the 10 AM meeting spot at Burger King, "B" is where Main street becomes Rock Springs, "C" is where Rock Springs road becomes Roundup Way; "D" is the turnoff onto Bowen Ranch road, and "E" is the entrance to Bowen Ranch. "F" is where we park our cars. "G" is the hot springs.
