About the Trail:
Sandstone Peak is the highpoint in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California. It is also known as Mount Allen, a name that was given and used mainly by the Boy Scouts. During the 1960s, in an attempt to honor Circle X benefactor Herbert Allen, the Scouts petitioned the United States Department of the Interior to rename Sandstone Peak. The request for “Mt. Allen” was denied because of a long-standing policy that prohibited naming geographical features after living persons. Nevertheless, the Scouts held an “unofficial” dedication ceremony in 1969 to honor their leader. A plaque honoring Herbert Allen stands on the summit of Sandstone Peak. The peak is part of the Circle X Ranch of the western Santa Monica Mountains, an area that is administered by the National Park Service and part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

PLEASE - Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions, dress accordingly, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Dogs, well behaved and picked up after would be fine on this one. Watching out for snakes, ticks, uneven footing, spectacular views, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous, rewarding and fun.
