Hoegee Loop is a shaded and reasonably easy loop hike from Chantry Flats in the San Gabriel Mountains. There will be several stream crossings with a bit of rock hopping. The stream is presently at a low level and everyone should have no difficulty crossing it and staying dry. The trail includes the gentle flowing stream, historical cabins dating from the early 1900’s and some spectacular views of the forest and city below..

This is an intermediate hike (not suited for beginners) of approximately 5 miles and about 1,100 feet of elevation gain. The hike is somewhat of a reverse hike as we will descend down the locked service road gate then turn left after the bridge crossing and go up the Lower Winter Creek trail to the Hoegee Campground. We will take a short snack break before continuing up Upper Winter Creek trail. The hike terminates just above the picnic area and parking lot at Chantry.

Chantry Flats parking requires an Adventure Pass ( Daily pass can be purchased for $5.00 or yearly is $30.00. Please do not wait until the last minute to obtain one. Daily passes are sold at the Pack Station at Chantry however I do not know what time they open in the morning. Passes can also be obtained at REI, Sports Chalet, Big 5 as well as local businesses close to the hike. I have two extra parking passes which I can loan out. Please contact me to reserve one.

The hike can be reached from either I-210 or I-10 and both have a Santa Anita exit. From I-10 exit Santa Anita and head north (10.6 miles to Chantry) eventually intersecting I-210 (drivers exiting I-210 will also head north). From the I-210 exit it is approximately 4.7 miles to Chantry Flats (of which 3 miles are up the winding road). Please allow yourself sufficient time to make the drive up and find parking. Weekend parking at Chantry is very busy so my advice is to arrive early. The hike begins promptly at the time indicated.

The hike should be completed in approximately 3.5 hours or less. The hike will proceed at a moderate but reasonable pace. Please have some hiking experience or reasonable fitness level under your belt before undertaking this hike. Again I want to remind everyone this is not a beginner hike.

Items to bring (recommendations):

1. Water or your favorite drink. I encourage you to pack a little extra. It can get warm during the hike which will necessitate a sufficient supply of fluids.

2. Snacks – Hikers are encouraged to bring something to share at our stop at the Hoegee Campground.

3. Sunscreen and mosquito repellent are advisable.

4. Shoes – hiking boots/shoes or a good pair of athletic shoes will suffice. Please do not show up wearing flip flops or sandals.

5. Camera and a hat/cap.

Socialized dogs are welcome on this hike and are officially required to be on leash.

This hike has a limited amount of attendance/spaces. If you sign up you are expected to attend especially if there is a waiting list. If you sign up and change your mind it takes 15 seconds to change your RSVP (do not wait until the last minute). It is unfair to hikers on the waiting list if you are a no show preventing them from moving up to attend the hike. I keep track of no shows and it may have an impact on future hikes with me. On hikes where I have set no limits on attendance this rule will not apply.
