Tuesday Night Trailblaze

Fun Outdoor Workouts!

Are you looking to add cardio workout during the week? Join us on the Griffith Park trails for a TNT workout! It's an intense workout with a fast pace start-to-finish, the group members are motivating, the views are amazing, and being outside feels great! Individually we push the pace as the group heads towards Mount Hollywood and at the peak we marvel at the view a few minutes before blazing back to the parking lot. So let's burn calories, build strength, and increase stamina. Pack light for a fun-fast pace!

If you are not familiar with TNT workouts please read all of the details before signing up.

TNT are interval training workouts: it's a high-intensity, fast pace start-to-finish, there are short bursts up hilly sections, the pace is faster on some of the flat & downhill sections, & the big climbs are individual goals. The group is typically in small clusters during the intervals (climbs, speed sections, etc.) and individually not far apart. There are quick recover points (brief stop or brisk walk) and a break at the top but the group enjoys moving fast start-to-finish.

Members that want to try a TNT workout for the first time should join us on the first Tuesday. It's always an intense workout and the route is typically shortest the first Tuesday of the month. The miles, elevation gain, and climbs increase the weeks that follow. The last Tuesday of the month should not be your first TNT workout. The organizer/sweep stays between the "Blazers" and the members in the process of improving their endurance. The organizer/sweep will wait at the regroup junctions, No Member Left Behind. However, you must be able to maintain a fast pace start-to-finish

The Plan: Steady Climb to Mount Hollywood
Brisk warm-up walk towards the Fern Canyon Trail, take the FCT to 5-Points. From 5-Points, go up to Vista View Point, and continue the steady climb on the East Ridge Trail to Mount Hollywood. At the peak we'll catch our breath & enjoy the view for a few minutes. Then we'll take the gentler Mount Hollywood Trail to Vista Valle Drive, pass by Water Tower 113, and pick up the Bill Eckert Trail, and complete the route.

Bonus #1: After Vista View Point, & just before the bridge, take a sharp right & go touch Glendale Peak, return to the bridge & continue to climb. The Glendale Peak Trail is a single trail that runs parallel to the East Ridge Trail & just above it; basically heading towards Vista View Point for about 1/10 of a mile. Bonus #2: After the bridge hop on the single trail on the left hand side that runs along the East Ridge Trail; a series of steeper, quick climbs up & back down to the ERT make it a bit tougher heading up. Bonus #3: immediately after Dante's Garden head down for a quick sprint and climb the south face of Mount Hollywood.

Difficulty: (Advance) TNT workouts are NOT slow pace, social hikes and the difficulty level is NOT for beginner hikers. TNT are interval training workouts up/down hilly sections with few breaks. You may use your hands for balance and leverage on steep trails. The workouts are for people that have been hiking/training regularly and want to add interval training to the weekly regimen. The TNT workout averages & an actual tracked workout (miles/gain/time/speed) are listed below.

Distance: 5 to 8 miles Gain: 900' to 1800' Time: 1.5 to 2.5 hrs
Tracked: Water Tower 113 Loop: 5.5mi/1200' gain/1:38 time/3.3mph

Lou, can I bring a co-worker with me tonight. He's ran the route with me before, on an off day, but I told him that tonight he would get a TNT treatment.

The Los Feliz Blvd. entrance should be open. But just in case the alternate route: from Los Felix Blvd. take the 5 frwy north & transition onto the 134 frwy. Heading west on the 134 frwy exit Forest Lawn Dr. go slight left at the off ramp. Then go left at Zoo Dr. (first light) followed by a right at the first stop sign onto Griffith Park Dr. Drive for about 3-miles (4 stop signs) & go right on Crystal Springs Dr. and then go right at next road/stop sign. There is no street sign there, its the road to the parking lots, but there are signs pointing to the Merry Go Round. Anyone traveling from Barham Blvd. or the valley should use the alternate route.
