Easy Eaton Canyon waterfall.

So, after a month and a half of doing a regular hike at Temescal canyon, I decided a change was needed.

If you are looking for an easily accessible year round flowing waterfall to hike to, this is it.

However, because its an easy waterfall hike, and the parking at Eaton Canyon nature center is free, it is VERY popular and crowded. Still, even your hike leader likes to take his time in the morning as others, so I scheduled this at 10:00.

This hike is basically 4-5 miles roundtrip, with little elevation gain, BUT with many stream crossings. This is not Bridge to Nowhere however, all stream crossings have enough boulders that you can still have (although no guarantee) dry footwear by the end.

So, 4-5 miles, little elevation gain, FREE parking, to see a 40-50 foot waterfall. Again, I can't guarantee you won't get wet, but you probably won't.

Afterwards, for those interested, we can go to the Altadena Ale House (on Fair Oaks) afterwards and try a beer you've never tried before.

All in all, having 35-40 people out of 96 people show up, wasn't too bad. I'm glad you all had a great time!

Great waterfall - full and gushing! Easy walk but not too easy - and certainly not boring - many streams and rocks and hills.

I hav to cancel my spot. End up working.

Howard Young, I just logged in to cancel my spot but I was going to bring my 18 pound dog with me. He's done this hike before with no problem. The water level and speed changes a little after rain and I found that dropping his leash just long enough for him to cross the river on his own speed helped both of our footing. He'll have a great time as will you. Another tip, I don't know your dog, but mine always wants to be in the mix of everything. I find near the front or at the back of the group is good placement to keep a dog from interrupting the stride of the pack.

One more thing, we will actually meet at the trailhead at the end of the parking lot, not the nature center. (although the nature center is nice to check out afterwards).

Hi! 1st time joining this hiking group for a hike. Over 140 people listed...are we going as one gigantic group or splitting into small groups? Also, I have a small 16 pound cavalier spaniel dog who has never been on a hike. Would this be an easy enough hike for him to handle and would the people who bring dogs go on the same trail & hike as the main group or on their own trail? Thanks!

I will keep everyone posted regarding the weather. I will make a decision tonight if the hike is still on, but I don't believe it will be necessary to cancel. Although it will be up to individuals as to whether to take the chance or not. Weather is supposed to be the same as today, Saturday.

Hi just to let everyone know, who this applies to, dogs are fine in the park as long as they are on a leash.

I live by the shops at montebello, I know its not far but would really like to carpool because the parking really scares me, anywhere on rosemead blvd or san gabriel blvd is ok too!

Just wanted to let everyone know, there is definitely a chance of rain on Sunday. But I will most likely NOT cancel. It has been very light misty drizzle off an on. However, this also means, the trail will be less crowded. I will give a more detailed update on Saturday night. It will up to you if you still want to go. I will be doing this again.

Is there a specific place where the 132 people hiking with you should meet you? Will you be holding up a sign so we know who you are?

    November 27, 2012

    • Bob G.

Roxanne, there is a major sign right at the end of the parking lot where the trailhead begins. We never really have a problem. Usually people just start asking is this hiking meetup group, and thats it. But all the trails at Eaton canyon begin at the same place.

    November 26, 2012

I would suggest people carpooling. Consider contacting your fellow meetup attendees to see if there is anyone is your neighborhood to carpool with. . I doubt all 119 of you will show, but even 60 will be a BIG group.

Sounds great! About when will the hike come to an end? Is it easy enough for beginners?

Since it's "very popular and crowded," and since we're starting later (love it!!!), how's the parking situation?

Assuming the weather is good, the lot will already be full even before this huge group arrives. Virtually all of you will have to park outside the ECNC grounds, on neighboring streets, and walk several blocks to the meeting spot.

I won't make this trip but this is a favorite hike of mine. Some of you may know how the bouldery trail and area right around the waterfall is usually really trashed. It's quite sad and mind boggling. It would do your heart some good to bring a couple of garbage bags along to clean up and beautify this lovely area!
