As the year turns toward its darker season, the threshold has long held special significance, the doorway between home and the world beyond, the boundary between the familiar and unknown, and in the folklore of the Hallows season, the meeting place between the living, the dead, and the Otherworld.
Join Linda and Hazel for Gourd Wards, a lecture and hands-on workshop exploring the history, folklore, and practice of seasonal protection and ward making.
We’ll begin by looking beyond the modern jack-o’-lantern to explore the traditions that came before it: Irish Samhain and Halloween folklore, carved turnip lanterns, frightening and apotropaic imagery, household and threshold protections, and the ways people used the materials available in their own landscapes to guard the home during liminal times of year.
From there, we’ll broaden our exploration to look at regional folk traditions and protective practices, including Appalachian folkways and the importance of place, season, and locally available materials. We’ll also discuss the difference between historical folk practices and the ways modern witches have adapted and reimagined them.
Then we’ll put those principles into practice.
Each participant will choose a pumpkin or gourd and create their own Gourd Ward to take home. Carve a watchful guardian, create an illuminated threshold lantern, mark your gourd with protective symbols, or transform it into a vessel containing petitions and materials chosen specifically for the work you want it to perform.
A selection of natural materials, decorative elements, carving and marking supplies, and ward-making materials will be available for you to work with. We’ll discuss their uses and help you think intentionally about what your ward protects, where it will be placed, what it welcomes, and what it keeps out.
Your $15 materials fee includes:
* One pumpkin or specialty gourd
* Use of shared carving and decorating supplies
* A selection of natural and ward-making materials
* Materials for petitions, binding, marking, and embellishment
* Everything needed to create one finished Gourd Ward to take home
No previous magical or crafting experience is necessary. Come prepared to learn, get your hands a little messy, and leave with a ward of your own making for the Hallows season.
Space and materials are limited. ***Advance registration is required by Friday 10/16, to guarantee your gourd. ***Late comers and those who would like to join us for the lecture only are welcome and can purchase a ticket less materials fee.
