What we’re about
We are focused on (1) building community for non-religious people in the lowcountry, (2) practicing secular values through mutual aid and volunteer service, and (3) engaging in activism, particularly around defending the first amendment guarantee of separation of state and church. We are based in Charleston, South Carolina and are a chapter of the American Humanist Association.
Founded in 1994, our members are freethinkers of many kinds. We call ourselves agnostics, atheists, skeptics, secular humanists, rationalists and scientific naturalists. We are an all volunteer, member supported organization. We welcome you and all who are interested in participating in our friendly community. Our events are open to members and non-members alike.

See all- Food Distribution with Park Circle CaresNorth Charleston High School, North Charleston, SC
Volunteer to distribute food with Park Circle Cares. SHL will be supporting Park Circle Cares’ monthly food distribution.
Park Circle Cares is a non-faith based, non-profit organization created in 2016 to assist people in the lowcountry who struggle with food insecurity. Park Circle Cares is a member agency with the Lowcountry Food Bank, and distributes 120-150 thousand pounds of food each year. What makes them unique among the many organizations working on the widespread problem of food insecurity in our community is that they only distribute healthy and nutritious foods, 75% of which is produce. Healthy dry goods and proteins make up the remainder.
Park Circle Cares is operated by an all-volunteer working board, and an enthusiastic group of volunteers who set up a farmers’ market style distribution at North Charleston High School on the third Saturday of each month.

Ready to get out of the city and enjoy the Lowcountry’s gems? As the heat and humidity fade with autumn, join other SHL members for an afternoon kayaking among the salt grass. Never been in a kayak before? No problem, the outfitter deals with beginners every day. They’re great with everyone from total newbies to long-time paddlers.
Low tide is the best time to paddle. When the water’s down, wildlife come out to take advantage of all the food, like shellfish exposed in the mudflats, and fish trapped in shallow pools. Low tide that day is about 2:30 pm, so we’ll have prime-time viewing!
