Ready to get out of the city and enjoy the Lowcountry’s gems? As the heat and humidity fade with autumn, join other SHL members for an afternoon kayaking among the salt grass. Never been in a kayak before? No problem, the outfitter deals with beginners every day. They’re great with everyone from total newbies to long-time paddlers.
Low tide is the best time to paddle. When the water’s down, wildlife come out to take advantage of all the food, like shellfish exposed in the mudflats, and fish trapped in shallow pools. Low tide that day is about 2:30 pm, so we’ll have prime-time viewing!
- When: 12:40 to 3:00 pm Sunday, 21 September (includes 20 minutes for pre-paddle setup)
- Where: Charleston Outdoor Adventures, 1871 Bowens Island Road (Google maps)
- Cost: $40 per person (with SHL discount)
- NOTE: Clicking “Attend” in Meetup does not sign up with COA. Please call COA directly, per the following section

COA’s description
This two-hour kayaking tour is paced for intermediate, novice and younger paddlers alike. It is an easy moving trip that will take you through the maze of tidal creeks that wrap around uninhabited hammock islands. An experienced local guide will lead you and the group through these beautiful coastal waterways, taking time to talk about the natural surroundings. Marsh tours provide the chance to see Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, Loggerhead Sea Turtles, American Wood Storks, oysters, local waterfowl and other wildlife.
Be sure to read COA’s recommendations on what to bring and wear.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, SHL has funds available to ensure everyone feels welcome and able to participate. If the cost of participation presents a challenge, please email us at shl@lowcountryhumanists.org, and we can discreetly arrange to cover your costs.
