The Friendly Infidels Movie Club: The Birdcage
Details
Join your humanist friends for a 30th anniversary screening of The Birdcage. We are going to the 3:45 pm showing at the Citadel Mall Stadium 16 theater on Sunday, June 7th.
Released in 1996 and directed by Mike Nichols, The Birdcage is a sharp, hilarious comedy about family, identity, and the lengths people will go to for love. Set in the vibrant world of a Miami drag nightclub, the film follows longtime partners Armand Goldman and Albert as they scramble to present themselves as a conventional family when their son announces his engagement to the daughter of a socially conservative politician. What follows is a fast-paced farce filled with mistaken identities, escalating deceptions, and unforgettable performances by Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, and Dianne Wiest. Beneath the laughter, The Birdcage offers a surprisingly warm and humane message about authenticity, acceptance, and the absurdity of prejudice, making it as relevant and entertaining today as it was thirty years ago.
You can use the link below to purchase tickets. Tickets are assigned seating. Sit wherever you like, but we encourage you to check the comments below to see which seats your SHL friends have purchased, and buy seats next to them, in front of them, behind them, near them… then post your seat choice back in the comments.
After the movie those who wish will be going to dinner at the West Ashley Santi’s Restaurante Mexicano, located at 1660 Savannah Hwy, for drinks, food and to discuss the film. If you don't want to attend the showing, feel free to join us to discuss the film afterwards. We should get there around 6 pm, depending on the number of commercials and previews. If you want to reach out to me ahead of time, I'd be happy to text you when we leave the theater. Please just let me know so I can try to get a big enough table.
