Oscar Watch: WILD HORSE NINE at the Drexel Theatre!

Join us as we get together to see a dark-comedy-dramatic-thriller and that rare combination of films that’s a heavy Oscar contender and wildly entertaining, WILD HORSE NINE! The film is written/directed by Martin McDonagh and follows a pair of CIA agents as they face a trust-testing mission from Santiago to Easter Island during 1973 in Chile. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup d'etat, two CIA officers are sent from Santiago to Easter Island. Among the island's iconic statues, the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, while one’s newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone's trip to this remote paradise sideways. The film is written/directed by Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, The Banshees of Inisherin) and stars John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits and Parker Posey. TRAILER: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Haw_sznA5aQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Haw_sznA5aQ) BUZZ & ACCLAIM: Wild Horse Nine premiered to a rapturous response at this year’s Venice International Film Festival where John Malkovich won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor! It is earning a stellar 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where critics call it “intelligent, superb filmmaking” with an “expert blend of poignant drama and blistering dark comedy” and featuring some of the best performances ever “by Malkovich, Rockwell and Buscemi.” This is one of those rare movies that's actually fun and entertaining, smart and moving, and poised to be a major player at next year's Oscars! DINNER PLAN: For dinner, we’ll switch it up this time and go with dinner at the Rusty Bucket BEFORE the show! Meet at 5:15pm and we’ll have a section reserved for the group! MOVIE PLAN: Immediately following dinner, it’s on to the show! We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing and will meet in the lobby area about 20 minutes before showtime! Advance ticket purchase not required for this theater. When you purchase yours, be sure to mention you’re with the Movie Group for admission and concession discounts. Also, recommend parking in the lot near Brassica and your car will be close to the restaurant and the theater! Exact showtime and complete details will be confirmed and announced as the date gets closer. Can't wait, Dan

Speak Easy (Storytelling)

The topic for November is "Lost." Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!

Bring your Raspberry Pi, Arduino, microcontroller, or any other electronic project and join fellow electronics makers for a night of creativity and collaboration! This session is open forum to share your current projects—whether complete or in progress, it’s all interesting! Whether you’re deep into embedded systems, exploring new ideas, or just getting started, you’ll find a welcoming space to collaborate, share, and get inspired. **New to electronics or curious about tinkering?** You’re absolutely welcome. No pressure and no experience required—just an interest in learning and building. While we continue to pursue a more permanent venue for this Meetup, we’ll be using public library facilities based on availability.

Progressive Euchre Night

Come solo or bring friends to this fun evening of casual progressive euchre! All skill levels welcome. We created this evening as a chance to have fun and make new friends. If you are looking for a serious, cutthroat night of swashbuckling card play, this event might not be for you. In this version of euchre, after everyone has dealt, you will switch partners and sometimes tables until you've played with everyone in your group. Each player tracks all points scored on their own scoresheet, which accumulates with each partner you play with. We'll have some light snacks and some non-alcoholic drinks. Feel free to bring something similar to share, or to keep all to yourself. We won't judge. Well, maybe a little. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and games will begin around 6:30 p.m.

Oscar Watch: LA BOLA NEGRA at the Gateway Film Center!

Join us for an Oscar Watch event as we get together to see this year’s winner of the Toronto Film Festival, LA BOLA NEGRA! This Spanish-language war-drama-romance tells the story of three men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain and inheritance, across three different eras -- 1932, 1937, and 2017. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: The film tells the story of three men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain and inheritance, across three different eras -- 1932, 1937, and 2017.The film is directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi and stars Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBVxKt0gKDY BUZZ & ACCLAIM: LA BOLA NEGRA has already had quite a run through the festival circuit and promises to be something special! Javier Ambrossi won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival and the film itself won the Audience Awards at the Toronto, Sydney and San Sebastian International Film Festivals! It is earning an excellent 88% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which says: “An intergenerational epic bathed in striking imagery and vibrant music, La Bola Negra is a sensorial feast that movingly testifies to the perseverance of queer identity throughout history.” Others call it a "grandiose historical epic" and “one of those rare films that feels both old and new.” La Bola Negra is expected to be a heavy awards contender and a likely Best Picture / Best International Film nominee! A NOT-SO-DREADED NETFLIX RELEASE: Netflix is usually my arch-nemesis this time of year, often buying up some of the year’s best films, and giving them a very limited one-or-two week theatrical release before sending them to the streaming service. But, this time, Netflix is giving LA BOLA NEGRA their first-ever full theatrical release in theaters! So, we’ll support the effort and as an added bonus, see what should be a really great film the way it was mean to be seen – in theaters! PLAN: We’ll plan for a mid-afternoon showing and will meet in the upstairs lobby area about 20 minutes before showtime. Once showtime is announced, advance ticket purchase is advised. Once you have yours, please list your seat number in the Comments section of this event! Showtime and complete details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer! ' Should be a good one, Dan
