What we’re about
Welcome to "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg"!
Please read all of the below carefully before you apply to become a group member.
What is YAHGIL about?
This group is about hiking in Luxembourg.
- Most times REALLY in Luxembourg, but sometimes in the surrounding countries, like Belgium, France, or Germany.
- Most times it is ONLY about hiking, but sometimes it may include picnics, swimming, or barbecue.
- Most times it will not rain, we promise! And if it does, we apologize in advance, but we will hike anyway :)
- Most times it will be brisk walks between 15 and 20km, but sometimes it can be just a light promenade. In winter it might be sometimes too cold for more than 10km.
Who can apply?
Everyone passionate about hiking is welcome.
If you are not trained at all, you might consider not joining the hard ones first, but once in a while there will be hikes suitable for beginners, just read the description for each event carefully.
We are dog-friendly, and if your dog is friendly with people and other dogs, feel free to bring it along!
We expect a "clearly recognizable profile photo", to keep fakes and spammers out.
If there is any reason for not having such a photo, let's talk about it. Send us a message if your application was rejected or not answered, and make sure that we can reply, check your mailbox settings.
Who are we?
The group owner has been hiking in Luxembourg and the greater region since early 2019. Over time, several co-organizers have joined and we're able to organize hikes almost every weekend, unless all of us are out of town at the same time.
If you're interested in organizing hikes as well, let us know, and you may become an organizer in the group
What are we looking for?
We look for beautiful routes, new ones to explore, and the best ones to be repeated occasionally.
And we're looking for nice people to join us, good discussions during the hikes, but also enjoying the silence and the sound of nature.
If you happen to know a beautiful route, we're always open for suggestions, but be aware that we cannot consider every idea and we cannot promise if and when we go somewhere.
What do we expect from you?
- Be on time if possible, and if you're late, let us know immediately. There is some tolerance and we wait for you if we know you're coming, but don't let it become a habit
- Unsubscribe as soon as you know you can't make it, even if it is 5 minutes before or after the official start of the event, it makes checking the participant list much easier and your spot can be taken by someone from the waiting-list.
- Use public transport if we provide information about it, or the carpool to be eco-friendly and reduce the amount of cars that are used
Member contribution
While the membership in MeetUp is free for normal users like you, the group owners have to pay a subscription, which has constantly increased over the years.
I have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the fictitious goal of "1 EUR per group member", and you can contribute whatever you feel comfortable with.
Be it 1 EUR per year, 1 EUR per hike, or 1 EUR per km (just kidding).
Let me know if the link doesn't work or you need to use a different way, like Payconiq or cash.
It's completely voluntary, but it helps a lot to cover the MeetUp subscription and all the small things that add up during the year.
Final remarks
There are comprehensive charters existing in other groups, with dozens of rules, but we try to get around it without that, although most of the listed points absolutely make sense and they are valid here as well, but without the need to state it. Our group, our rules.
The necessary legal minimum to claim:
"All Events are at your own risk, there is no liability by the hosts for any damage. Also, each participant is responsible for respecting the sanitary measures that might be in place at the particular moment, like distance and mask-wearing."
If you made it here, congratulations!
Welcome to YAGHIL, we're looking forward to hiking with you!
Cheers,
Jens.

See all- Exploring the South-Luxemburg hills (13.9k hike, with optional 5k extension)Rodange gare, Rodange
Hello Friends!
Join us for a scenic 14km hike in the south of Luxembourg, where we will tackle one of the higher and more prominent hills in Luxembourg (Titelberg), as well as see some Celtic Ruins (pre-dating even the Roman era of Luxembourg)
After the first climb from Rodange to the plateau of Titelberg, we will stay at more or less the same altitude, meandering up and down through the countryside, sometimes in forests, sometimes through fields, sometimes on mossy hiking paths and sometimes on paved or asphalted roads (although I tried to keep those at a minimum).
As the path is not completely covered by trees, and the sun is expected to be out in full on Saturday, please make sure you have adequate protection (sunscreen, hat, cap) as well as enough water to keep hydrated.
There are picnic benches along the route, but sadly only after about 10-11 km, so, depending on the size of the group, as well as the need for food, we can stop halfway as well near some benches, but it would mean not everyone can sit for lunch. At the tail-end of the hike, we will be traversing the Gaalgebierg, with stunning views of the surroundings, and in the end we descend to Belvaux-Soleuvre Trainstation, where the first (official) part of the hike ends.
This is a point-to-point hike, meaning our endpoint is at a different location than our starting point, which means that careful planning is required to get to and from the hike, especially when people want to use a car to get there.
When we arrive at Belvaux I will do an additional 5 km, in order to "bag" some (2) more hills for my 42 hills of Luxembourg quest. This is not very scenic, as it will be through the outskirts of Belvaux, but when people would like to join that part, they are welcome.
One word of caution: that additional 5k will be done "at pace", which means an average of 6-7km/h, fast walking uphill and jogging downhills. If you want to join this part, please make sure you have appropriate shoes for that, and that fast hiking / slow trail running is something you enjoy doing.Difficulty:
This hike has a PADS rating of 2.5, which makes it of moderate difficulty, primarily driven by the distance:Pace: 2.4 --> between 4 and 5 km/h
Ascent: 2.2 --> 300m of elevation
Distance: 3.4 --> 13.9km of distance
Surface: 2.0 --> well defined hiking trailsTotal: 2.5
Meeting Point:
We will meet in front of the Gare Rodange at the following location Meeting Location (Google Maps)Public Transport:
From Luxembourg Gare:
Take train RB5059 from Luxembourg Gare Central at 09:50 in the direction of Athus, and exit the train after 29 minutes in Rodange GareFrom direction of Esch:
Be on train RE458, which arrives in Rodange at 10:09
Hop ons:
Bettembourg: 09:33
Schifflange: 09:40
Esch: 09:44
Belval Université: 09:49
Differdange: 09:57
Pétange: 10:03Car(pool):
Carpooling is an option, but with a caveat (as this is a point to point hike).
I would suggest to carpool to Belval (Université) train station, and take the train from there to Rodange. This way, on the way back, you can take the train back to Belval, and carpool back from there.Train to pick from Belval to be in time for the hike is listed above in the public transport section.
I have set up a carpool, which can be used to plan carpools together:

The hike is at your own risk, and please make sure to wear proper shoes and bring some water and food for yourself!
The weather looks sunny and warm for the weekend, so please make sure you can stay hydrated during the hike.
Looking forward to hiking with you!Gordon & Brenda
