Mad about Bristol road trip to Hastings for pirates weekend!

UPDATE ... Helen and I are booked into the accommodation detailed ... Northrise Retreat ... please make your own arrangements for accommodation... we can all travel up together but please note we are booked to stay for 3 nights so will be travelling up on the Friday and returning at some point on the Monday ... aaaaarrrrrghhhh

The Hastings Pirate Weekend for 2026 is officially scheduled for Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th, 2026, transforming the seaside town into a buccaneer's paradise with parades, stalls, and family fun, though always check their official Facebook page for final confirmations as a free, weather-dependent event

Dates: July 18th & 19th, 2026.

Location: Hastings Old Town, UK.

Activities: Expect pirate costumes, live entertainment, stalls, treasure hunts, and a lively atmosphere.

Cost: It's a free-to-attend event, with fundraising activities supporting future festivals.

I thought it would be nice to visit some of the old pubs in Bristol.
starting of at The Golden Guinea ( Guinea Steet) this pub has a fabulous beer garden and plenty of different beers to try. Dating back to 1745, it gets it's name from the gold Guinea coin.

Heading onto the Ostrich with seating area overlooking the harbour, this pub was also built around 1745 and has thought to be used by smugglers and pirates. In the lounge of the pub you can still see a cave that joins Radcliffe caves which the smugglers used.

Heading over the bridge to the Hole in the wall. built in the 1700's this pub is famous for the small hole in the wall which was used as a spy hole to spot "press-gangs or custom men". Too many beers, could find you on a ship sailing to the West Indies. it is also thought to have connections to Robert Louis Stephenson and Long John Silver.

Our last stop is the famous Jazz Bar "The Old Dukes". It was built in 1775, for a lodging and boarding house for the Duke of Cumberland. The building is grade ii listed, that probably explains why the toilets are terrible, but it's a great music venue to end the night.
