MLK Day at the Capitol Rotunda - For Women Age 50+ (+1 OK) - Dress Warmly!
Details
Meetup with friends at the oldest state celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the U.S. The theme is “The Power of Unity.” Hosted by WPR’s Dr. Jonathan Øverby, it features Chicago’s Victory Travelers gospel group, violinist Dr. Brianna Ware-Boggs, pianist Becca May Grant, Memorial Honor Guard and the presentation of the 2026 MLK Heritage Awards. Journalist Ahmed Baba will give the keynote address. Being a holiday, this is a +1 event if you want to bring friend or spouse.
This event appears to have seating but be prepared to stand. While the cold weather may reduce crowds, it's unknown if we will secure a good view or not!
We meet at the NOVO apartment building lobby area, located one block away at 11:20AM. Please be prompt as seating is LIMITED at the Capitol. The building has underground PUBLIC parking that can be entered from Doty or Wilson Street. The garage entrance is between Pinckney and MLK Ave. See photo below for marked parking garage entrance locations. EXIT THE GARAGE, return to street level, and enter the Novo apartment building lobby from the street sidewalk. The Novo apartment building entrance is directly across from the Embassy Suites hotel main entrance. For parking details, see extra photo below; garage entrances are marked by 3 pink crosses. You can also get right here by the A B C 38 75 E F and R bus lines. (The D line will require a 5 block walk).
Afterwards, we can grab a coffee or drink near the Capitol. If they are quite crowded, and we are a small group, we can return to the common area of the Novo building, and I will have a wine bottle on ice and coffee or hot tea is available.
