About us
MAKE Roanoke is a non-profit makerspace in Roanoke, VA. MAKE Roanoke is entirely led and run by volunteers. We are located at 128 Albemarle Ave SE, B, Roanoke VA 24013. We don't have standard open hours, but instead give our membership key fobs to access the space whenever suits them.
Mission Statement
MAKE Roanoke exists to promote knowledge, skill, and creativity in science, technology, crafts, and the arts. We strive to foster these values in an inclusive and safe environment. To these ends, MAKE Roanoke shall provide the following:
- An inclusive and collegial social framework for members to inspire and collaborate with others of similar interests;
- A maintained communal space providing safe access to tools and supplies for projects; and
- Events to promote education and collaboration between members and the greater Roanoke community.

General Orientations & Space Tours for New & Prospective Members
MAKE Roanoke, 128 Albemarle Ave SE, Roanoke, VA, USCome learn about MAKE Roanoke by taking a tour of Roanoke's own non-profit makerspace and staying for the General Orientation! General Orientations are required for membership. The tours start promptly at 11 am.
Memberships cost $50/mo and get you 24/7 access to the space via a keyfob for all the equipment that you're trained on. Find out more about MAKE Roanoke Membership here
The Orientations will consist of a tour showcasing what MAKE Roanoke has to offer, a video explaining our rules and procedures, a briefer tour highlighting safety equipment, and then time for Q&A and signing up for memberships.
Please note that additional shop-level orientations and tool-level training are required to use most tools.
You do not have to sign up for a membership, if you want to just take the tour and/or orientation to learn more, that's very welcome!
Please note that MAKE Roanoke is an active workshop:
- Children who are not participating in the event are not permitted in the space.
- Closed toed shoes are required in the space at all times by everyone, regardless of age or participation in an event. No sandals, crocs, or bare feet.
- You may be asked to remove or tuck in dangling jewelry, lanyards, etc for safety.
- Depending on the activity, other dress code rules may apply.

Intro to PCB Design and KiCad
MAKE Roanoke, 128 Albemarle Ave SE, Roanoke, VA, USJoin us at MAKE Roanoke to learn the basics of designing a custom printed circuit board (PCB) from scratch using the free software KiCad.
Students need to bring their own laptop with a mouse and have KiCad 10 already installed. You can download KiCad here: https://www.kicad.org/download/
This class will go through each stage of the design process including:
- Schematic capture
- Managing parts and footprints
- Board layout and routing
- Gerber generation
This class is recommended for those age 12 and up. We suggest that students come with some basic electronics skills and familiarity with schematic symbols is helpful, but not necessary. This class is open to the public, you do NOT need to be a MAKE Roanoke member to attend!
All materials, taxes, and fees are covered in the class price of $25. The discounted rate for MAKE Roanoke Members is $15. MAKE Roanoke members can also bring a guest at the discounted rate. Learn more about MAKE Roanoke membership at https://mkroa.org/membership.

How to Source Wood Maker Mini
MAKE Roanoke, 128 Albemarle Ave SE, Roanoke, VA, USMAKE Roanoke is pleased to offer another session in our series of FREE short classes we're calling Maker Minis! This one is a How to Source Wood class.
This class, taught by Matt Brown, will teach you the pros and cons of different ways to source lumber around Roanoke, VA. This class is recommended for people ages 12 and up. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This class is open to the public, you do NOT need to be a MAKE Roanoke to attend!
In this mini class you will learn:
- Different ways to buy wood
- Different local places to source lumber
- What is a board foot and how to calculate how much wood to buy for your project
