Details

This is a one-on-one tool test for experienced welders who want access to the Make Salt Lake Metal Shop and MIG welder without taking our intro class. A Make Salt Lake instructor will walk you through our shop and machine, then watch you set up and weld to confirm you can work safely and independently on our equipment. This is not a beginner class. If you are new to MIG welding, please take our Welding - Intro to MIG class instead.

Topics Covered

  • Metal Shop tour and orientation to Make Salt Lake
  • Shop safety rules, PPE, fire safety, and ventilation
  • Walkthrough of our MIG welder's components and controls
  • Machine setup: wire, gas, polarity, voltage, and wire speed
  • Material preparation
  • Skills check: welding demonstration
  • Shutdown, cleanup, and equipment storage

Additional Information
This class is intended for attendees with prior MIG welding experience, and you will be asked to demonstrate safe, competent use of the machine. Participants must wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe leather shoes. We recommend bringing your own welding PPE, but we have some available if you need it. After successfully completing this class, attendees will be given a certificate allowing them access to the Make Salt Lake Metal Shop and use of the MIG Welder with a paid Make Salt Lake membership. Attendees who do not pass the skills check will need to take our Welding - Intro to MIG class to gain access. There are no retests or refunds. Note that this class does not cover the use of the Forge or other welder types.

How to Find Us
Please arrive on time, we will meet in the Make Salt Lake lobby then walk you to the workshop. Attendees who arrive more than 10 minutes late may not be able to join.
