This is an in-person generative poetry workshop for women and femmes. In this workshop, "She Went There: Writing the Taboo" participants will learn from professional writer and editor Emily Graf.

Course Description:

Have you ever read a poem that makes your heart leap with its unapologetic truth telling? Have you closed the book feeling a little more seen, because someone was willing to say the unsayable thing? Maybe it was a poem about sex, shoplifting, mental illness, or ambivalence about marriage. The subject matter is almost irrelevant to the feelings evoked; these are poems of fierceness, revelation, uncertainty, and grit.

In this generative poetry writing workshop, we’ll encounter poems that “go there” from celebrated contemporary poets, including Kim Addonizio, Eugenia Leigh, Richard Siken, and others. We will explore their devices and craft: how do these poems do what they do effectively, without trauma-dumping or over-sharing? How do they make the highly personal universal?

What elements can we integrate into our own work? We will then spend time, through guiding prompts, crafting our own poems that “go there.” There will be time for sharing and reflection at the end. New and experienced poets welcome. This will be a women and femmes only space.

The event is capped at 12 participants.
