Monday 13th April 6-7pm – Trans Day of Visibility Special: Discussing 'Dragman’ by Steven Appleby and ‘Don’t Call Me Mister You F****** Beast’ Article (1972)
Full of humour, action and wit the graphic novel ‘Dragman’ is a crime thriller inspired by superhero comics and informed by the author’s own experiences of exploring their gender expression and identity. The book is widely available in hardback and eBook versions.
‘Don’t Call Me Mister You F****** Beast’ is a short 1972 article written by the ‘Transvestite, Transsexual and Drag Queen’ group formed within the Gay Liberation Front and discusses their concerns and place in society at the time. One of its authors Rachel Pollack would go on to pen the character Coagula for DC Comics in the 1990s, who is widely recognised as the first ‘mainstream’ transgender superhero. The article is available to find online and we can also provide printed copies.
Please note the reading for this session contains mentions of transphobia, hate crimes and violence. If you would like to discuss any of the content before reading please get in touch.
