This is an Advent Service incorporating the candle-lit Lucia Procession, traditionally observed in Sweden around St Lucy’s Day to celebrate light in the shortest and darkest days of the year. Over 1,000 people came last year.
As in previous years, we are very grateful to the organisers for inviting us - the York Anglo-Scandinavian Society (YASS) in collaboration with the Dean & Chapter of York Minster.
The Lucia procession this year will be performed by the choir Chorus Pictor – again travelling across from Sweden to sing in the Minster (they were the main choir in 2015). The choir has been further extended by a great number of chorister friends, so we can envisage a spectacular procession with more than 50 singers.
As long as I can get tickets, then we will also meet afterwards for traditional Swedish glögg (mulled wine) and biscuits in the Chapter House. Traditionally, we retire to the pub afterwards - often with the choir.
We'll be leaving the restaurant about 7:00pm to walk to the minster, so if you're just coming to Lucia, but not the meal, suggest that you meet us at the restaurant before 7:00pm.
