About us
TOTTENHAM COMMUNITY COHESION & RACE RELATIONS
Peace • Understanding • Education • Evidence • Community Action
This group brings together people who want to improve community cohesion, strengthen race relations and develop peaceful, practical solutions to issues affecting Tottenham.
We propose to meet regularly at the Marcus Garvey Library, subject to venue approval, to exchange ideas, share experiences, learn from one another and discuss matters of public interest.
Our discussions will include the history and legacies of Marcus Garvey and Bernie Grant, Black cultural heritage, the future of the Marcus Garvey Centre and Library, community safety, policing, institutional accountability, anti-Black racism, institutional racism and reparatory justice.
Recent concerns about the relocation of the Marcus Garvey bust and reports of possible redevelopment have highlighted the importance of establishing facts, examining evidence, encouraging public dialogue and avoiding premature conclusions.
Tottenham's history also reminds us of the importance of preventing community tensions from escalating into confrontation or violence.
Our principles are:
- Protection, not confrontation.
- Cooperation, not escalation.
- Evidence, not rumours.
- Education, not ignorance.
- Community cohesion, not division.
Meetings will provide opportunities for open discussion, community self-education, sharing historical knowledge, examining public information and developing constructive proposals.
Everyone interested in respectful dialogue and improving community relationships is welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity or background.
This is an independent community initiative, not an official Marcus Garvey Library or Haringey Council group.
Organised by John Canoe, Reparation Nation Limited (RNL).
OUR AIM: TO TURN COMMUNITY CONCERNS INTO CONSTRUCTIVE DISCUSSION, KNOWLEDGE AND PEACEFUL ACTION.
