Farewell from HAAM

Details

With sadness and regret, we are announcing that HAAM is being disbanded due to a lack of volunteers willing to run the organization (and covid complications, the whopping price increase of meeting rooms, exhaustion with online meetings, etc.). This means that there will be no scheduled meetings or other events, no membership fees, no elected executive, no website, and no bank account, treasurer, or charitable status.

Manitoba Humanists will continue to exist as an informal online community via our private Facebook group. If you are not currently a member and would like to join, please CONTACT US at info@haam.ca. (Note that this group is for non-believers only, not a place to debate religion.) Many of our activities will continue in this group. Most of the current executive will continue to be active in the group and can be contacted there for questions and concerns.

All members of the group will be able to

  • Share personal stories, questions, and concerns
  • Post news and articles of interest to Humanists
  • Create events for the entire group, or for friends within the group (e.g., meet for brunch, or at a pub, restaurant, or park, etc.)
  • Post Calls to Action on issues of interest to Humanists, such as petitions, letter-writing campaigns, etc.
  • Share information about external events, conferences, etc. of interest to Humanists
  • Participate in the Partners for Life blood donation program
  • Offer and provide support and information about resources (like secular counsellors, charities, etc.)

The following accounts will be cancelled, shut down, or archived over the coming weeks/months (beginning immediately). Specifically:

  • Website will be removed before the end of the year
  • Email account will no longer be monitored
  • Newsletters (like this one) will cease
  • Meetup account will be deleted
  • Banking and PayPal accounts will be cancelled
  • Library books will be donated
  • Public social media accounts will be shut down

You may wish to look at the Resources pages on HAAM’s website before the website is taken down (http://mbhumanistsatheists.ca/resources). These pages contain valuable information about Humanism, secular charities, secular counselors, and other secular sources of help and advice.

After our bills are paid and assets disbursed, the money remaining in HAAM’s bank account will go to charities as determined by our current executive and following CRA rules.

We will honour our commitment to pay the tuition and board fees for the student we sponsor at Kasese Humanist School in Uganda. His tuition will be paid to the end of secondary school.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who has served on the board and committees since the establishment of HAAM - and a special thanks to the recent (and past) volunteers who stepped up to help our current exec just in time to assist with shutting it down.
Your efforts have touched many lives for the better. We are optimistic about the future of Humanism and hopeful that we will stay in touch and continue to contribute to the greater good of our community.
