We're folks who like to dance! We go to all sorts of dances, from ballroom to swing and to freestyle-express-yourself dances. Dancing is good for you, so jump in and join in the fun! Ceilidh Celtic Dance Benefit for Cuba at Ashkenaz

7:30 pm live music and dancingThe Ceilidh Dance Benefit is a lively community fundraiser featuring traditional Celtic music by The Sunroom Sessions, dancing, and a welcoming atmosphere for all ages and experience levels. Guests can enjoy live music and participate in easy-to-follow group dances led by a caller, while coming together to support a meaningful cause. It’s a fun, social evening that combines great music, dancing, and community spirit.
Proceeds will support a program in Havana providing essential care to 75 elders who have no other support system to rely on and are suffering especially badly under the current blockade. This program was suggested to Colin (a member of The Sunroom Sessions) by a Cuban musician friend that he made in Havana in 2019 as a place where the money raised will directly and quickly help people in great need. It is run by Colin’s friend’s pastor at the International Christian Community in Havana, who started it 20 years ago in an effort to fill in the support system gaps for as many elders in their community as possible. There are five trained caregivers who make (at least) weekly house visits to the elders in their care, buy and bring them food, medicine, and other essentials, provide transportation, offer companionship, check in on their mental and physical well-being, and more. Funds raised will help support this work and close a gap in the program’s $21,000 minimum budget for 2026.

Tickets will be a sliding scale $10-30 at the door. This is a fundraiser and Bay Area money goes a long way in Cuba, so please contribute what you can to the cause!

No experience necessary; no partner necessary. Kids welcome. The caller teaches each dance right before we dance it. Arrive by 7:45 to catch the 15-minute lesson on the square-dance swing with Martha Soule-Fahey: learn what to do when you hear "swing your partner!"

Square dancing: 8:00-10:00 pmThis is a queer-friendly event. Role-switching is encouraged. The caller uses the terms "ladies" and "gents" to refer to the dance roles; anyone may play these roles.

BYOB: You may bring beer and wine. No hard alcohol allowed. Bring your water bottles!
