Does Capitalism Meet Humanity’s Basic Needs? What Are the Alternatives?

This discussion explores whether capitalism provides the necessities everyone needs to live a dignified life. Despite global wealth and technological progress, many people still struggle to access food, housing, healthcare and other essentials. We will consider whether this reflects a failure of capitalism, problems with how it is managed, or deeper issues within the way our economy is organised.

Could alternatives such as social democracy, democratic socialism or universal basic services offer a better way forward? Join us for an open philosophical discussion about economic systems, human dignity, freedom and whether the economy should serve humanity or humanity should serve the economy.

Join us for our monthly Philosophical Discussion at the Royal Oak in Crosby (L22 6QN).

Our discussions are guided by a moderator to ensure that every voice is heard in a respectful, balanced and inclusive environment. We believe in "doing no harm"—in conversation as in life—so we maintain a space of radical empathy, active listening and open-minded inquiry.
