The Conservative Book Group

Most people have no idea there is a tradition of politically conservative thought that covers philosophy, politics, literature, art and culture.

This book club is for people interested in exploring this tradition for whatever reason - casual curiosity, a search for something deeper from life, a desire to understand a different point of view.

I myself am patchily familiar with it - I am aware of far more books than I have made the effort to read. This club is therefore something of a kick up the arse for me, as well as hopefully an opportunity for intellectually curious folk to meet, discuss and socialise.

I’d like to keep the criteria pretty wide - anything from Roger Scruton to Joseph de Maistre to Jordan Peterson to Evelyn Waugh can be described as conservative in my opinion. I am also open to reading the occasional book not from the conservative tradition, but with a view to analysing them in the light of conservative political ideas.

All political points of view are welcome at the club - for me diversity of thought is always more interesting. But needless to say you’ll need something of an open mind to engage productively - if you’re closed-minded, this might not be for you.

Once I have enough uptake the club will take place weekly at a as yet to be decided venue in central Manchester (suggestions welcome) at 7ish.
