About us
Welcome to B'Ham Hikers (Beginner-Intermediate Level)!
I encourage members to check out other local meetup groups like
Check out Birmingham Outdoor Adventurers on Meetup https://www.meetup.com/birminghamoutdooradventurers
Also, a sister Facebook group called “B’ham Hikers." Come check us out on other platforms.
The purpose of this group is to get beginner and intermediate hikers together, so we don’t have to hike alone. Look out for Difficult-level hikes, too! Your feedback is vital to our success!
We like to hike at an average pace, take in the sights, and take lots of breaks. We have a firm “no hiker left behind” policy. I always say we are here to enjoy being outside, not to win any awards.
Group Rules
1) Each hiker is responsible for themselves, their pets, and their guests.
2) Read the description of each event. There will be different difficulty levels; make sure you know what to expect.
3) Check the event chat for weather cancellations.
4) No solicitation

Rocktown at Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Refuge
Rocktown Trailhead, 3440 Chamberlain Rd., Lafayette, GA, USThere are several VERY important pieces of information regarding this hike. Please read ALL the details before arrival.
Come explore this amazing natural phenomenon called Rocktown at Crockford-Pigeon Mountain in LaFayette, GA. The trail is easy, and packed with extremely interesting rock formations. It is a recreational rock climber’s paradise. I’m not a rock climber, just have a healthy appreciation for the beauty of the structures.
SPECIAL NOTES:
- You MUST purchase a GEORGIA permit to participate in this hike at Wildlife Management Area. Passes may be purchased at the WMA website . Last time, I just purchased a one-day fishing permit, which is currently $10.
- We will be asking you to show proof of purchase before beginning the hike.
- While it is located in Eastern time zone, since we’re all Bham area folks, I’ve posted the start time as 9:00 am Central time. (which would be 10:00 EST). Note that your auto-update clocks will adjust once you cross the state border.
- We will spend some time exploring at the biggest collection of rocks, so pack a lunch to enjoy.
- Children and dogs are welcome. Dogs must be on a leash, and children should be supervised at all times, especially when exploring Rocktown Proper.
General notes:
- Easy trail with tree roots and stones that can present tripping hazards
- 2.3 miles total out-and-back trail, 206 ft elevation gain (excluding exploration of Rocktown)
- Google maps seems to know exactly where "Rocktown Trailhead" is while Apple Maps does not. AllTrails has it already entered as a hike, and you can use the driving directions provided there - which you can open in Apple Maps if you choose. Although it doesn't seem to take you exactly, but it looks like it gets you close. Google maps seems to be the best bet.
- Plenty of water and snacks are a requirement
- There is little-to-no cell service in the WMA. I recommend downloading maps and directions offline if you do not have a good sense of direction. The trail itself is pretty intuitive, but the drive to and from is not.
- End time is estimated, dependent on how long we take to explore Rocktown
- Bug spray is highly recommended.
- If you want to make a whole fun weekend of it, DeSoto Park is nearby with great trails, as well as DeSoto Falls (separate from the park). There is also Cloudland Canyon State Park nearby, also with fantastic trails - and two terrific waterfalls.
