Exploring and Sharing

Join me for a refreshing morning walk and enjoy the time to socialise and share a coffee with new and old friends at Southys Café by the beach.

Together we'll explore the intriguing heritage of early colonial Newcastle, and the stunning views from the best vantage points in the city. We’ll be able to share the fun of looking out for whales, exploring a grand Cathedral with a convict graveyard, admiring many handsome restored terraces, and wandering through an inner-city rainforest haven. The high point of our walk will be emerging at the Obelisk with panoramic views of ocean, harbour and mountains.

There is also the satisfaction of winding our way downhill from the Shepherds Hill headland to sea level and the much-loved Bogey Hole. All along the way are opportunities for architectural and landscape photography or capturing a group shot.

Agenda
I’ll meet you 9.00AM at the James Fletcher Memorial in Fletcher Park and we’ll have time to look out for passing whales and dolphins.

At 9.15AM we’ll set out together along Church St and up to the Cathedral and its early graveyard. From there we’ll continue uphill to the water Reservoir and take time for the harbour views and photographs.

We’ll then find our way into Arcadia Park, up to the Obelisk with its 360-degree views, and through the park to Shepherds Hill on the headland.

Our return path winds and steps downhill through King Edward Park to the Bogey Hole. Then we’ll stroll on to Southys café above Newcastle Beach, where we can relax and enjoy conversation and coffee together.

The total walking distance is about 3.0 km on hilly streets. The path up to the Obelisk and downhill through King Edward Park has stairs.

Free weekend parking is available on street near Fletcher Park or there are several bus services to nearby King Street.

Join me on a refreshing ferry ride from Queens Wharf across Newcastle harbour, to enjoy a walk exploring the rich heritage of Stockton and the Shipwreck Walk. We’ll have an easy-going pace together along the waterfront taking in the places of early colonial wharves and slipways, lime kilns, salt works, the first coal mine and the infamous Pirate Point. On the northern breakwall we'll be able to discover the stories of Shipwreck Walk, built over the remains of 20 or more ships wrecked on the Stockton Oyster Bank or nearby rocks.

For photographers there are excellent views to Nobbys Lighthouse and ships moving through the harbour entry, or look out for seals sunning themselves on the rocks.

Back in the main street we'll have time to socialise with new and old friends and enjoy a coffee at the Autumn Rooms Café.

This is a family friendly event. We’ll go ahead whether it’s sunny or raining.

Agenda
I’ll meet you 9.15AM at the Queens Wharf landing (Muloobinba) and we’ll catch the Stockton Ferry leaving at 9.30AM.
The fare can be paid by Opal card or a contactless credit/debit card.

It's a 5 minute journey across the Hunter River to the Mitchell St wharf. From the landing we'll head east along the foreshore path, past several historical waterfront sites, to Shipwreck Walk that extends for about 1.0km along the northern breakwall. There’ll be plenty of time to explore the wreck sites and take photographs.

About 10.45AM we'll make our way back to Mitchell Street and the Autumn Rooms Cafe, where we can relax together with a coffee and something to eat.

We’ll return on the 12:00PM ferry from the Stockton wharf.

The total walking distance is about 4 km on flat and well paved paths.
