The site of the original medieval manor house, the Chapel you see today was created from the ruins by the Reverend Lewis Way in the 1800’s.
Consecrated in 1819, the service was attended by poet John Keats and the Chapel’s unique imagery inspired his poems The Eve of St Agnes and The Eve of St Mark.
The Dixon's, Wilder's, Whittaker's and Bessborough's all used the Chapel of St Paul as a space for private family worship; with the 9th Earl of Bessborough commissioning Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel to complete the restoration and redecoration of the space after he purchased the estate in 1924.

Royal Haslar Hospital was the first naval hospital in the country, receiving its first patients in 1753. It closed in 2009, having cared for casualties from almost every action from the War of the Spanish Succession to the recent conflict in Afghanistan. For the last 60 years it was the district general hospital, treating NHS patients alongside those of the armed forces in its impressive Georgian-era building.

Work is underway to retain and enhance its heritage significance, heal the scars of the late 20th century, and construct new buildings to complement the old ones.

Guides from the Haslar Heritage Group will lead tours of Haslar grounds, pointing out buildings of unique architecture, telling of its rich history and illustrious medical, naval, and military background, and also explaining the future roles this special heritage site will eventually offer.
