Picket Wire Canyon Hike and Camp
Details
We will be traveling to Picket Wire Canyon to see the tarantula “migration”, petroglyphs, and America’s largest dinosaur track. We are planning to go hiking (round trip 11.5 mi), camping, and possibly rock climbing.
The hike will start at Withers Canyon Trailhead, where we will trek 5.75 miles to the dinosaur tracks. We will trek back 5.75 miles to the trailhead, and drive down two miles to Picketwire Canyon Overlook (Coordinates: 37.6437, -103.58051) to set up camp for the night.
Tarantulas will be at the peak of their mating season, where male tarantulas are wandering in droves looking for mates. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE SPIDERS, DO NOT JOIN.
Warnings
This may be a challenging hike. It will be warm out where we are going and there is not much shade. Water may or may not be available to filter from the Purgatoire River. Spiders, scorpions, and snakes are all possible to encounter.
