About us
IMPORTANT NOTE FROM NANCY H.: Someone has been sending emails impersonating me, presumably as some sort of scam. If you get an email from nancyhils187@gmail.com it is NOT from me. I do NOT send out solicitation emails for any reason.
Writing may be a solitary activity, but that doesn't mean you have to go it alone! When we write together, we give each other energy, support, and accountability.
Writing Together is based in Ithaca, New York, but we welcome all writers who want to set aside an hour to write, no matter where you are. We are writers of fiction and nonfiction, poets, screenwriters, students, journalers and journalists, memoirists, technical writers... Whether you're writing a novel or tomorrow's to-do list, come write it with us!
Our online writing sessions begin with quick introductions, where writers describe their projects and what they hope to accomplish in the next hour. Then, we focus on our writing. After we've written for an hour, we check back in to say how it went. There's no critique and no pressure--just the opportunity to commit to an hour of writing with others who've made the same commitment.
Writing Together is a great way to make progress on whatever writing project is on your desk. We hope you'll join us!

In person: We Declare, A Storytelling Project for Our Times
Kitchen Theatre Company, 417 West State / MLK, Jr. St., Ithaca, NY, USNOTE: No need to RSVP, as this is not a Writing Together event. I'm just spreading the word. One of our writers, Felicity, will be reading a piece. There are two performances: one at 1:00 p.m. and the other at 4:00 p.m. The event is free (or sliding scale if you want to contribute), but tickets are going fast!
We Declare is a storytelling project for these times. In the lead-up to July 4, 2026, participating local writers have created short pieces in response to brief phrases taken directly from the Declaration of Independence. These personal stories are not editorials, but provide a snapshot into this moment in American history, a period with uncanny parallels to 1776.
At a time when our federal government threatens to silence and censor free speech, We Declare is an act of rebellion to speak out; when they seek to divide us, we stand together; when they spread hate, we listen to one another with love and respect. The stories amplify compelling voices with the goal of building greater community through increased understanding and empathy.
2026 marks two anniversaries: the 250th of the Declaration of Independence, and the 20th of Ellen Schmidt’s Ithaca-based Writing Room community. From across the US and 15 countries, more than 100 people have participated in Ellen Schmidt’s classes. Some have moved far away, we’ve seen each other through illnesses, births, deaths and a pandemic. We’ve learned the power of expressing ourselves and listening deeply to one another through the gift of writing. Now we invite you to share in this powerful experience.
We Declare writers are giving two performances on June 27 at the Kitchen Theatre Company in Ithaca, at 1 pm and 4 pm. Tickets are free on a sliding scale, but registration is required: kitchentheatre.org/wedeclare.
