About us
Welcome to the Oxford Social Circle! π₯³
We are a friendly, inclusive community dedicated to helping people across Oxford connect, build authentic social lives, and find their community. Whether you are new to the city or looking to expand your local circle, you will find a warm space here.
Our Approach π§
We provide the platform and opportunitiesβyou create the connections. Rather than a managed service, we offer two monthly events to serve as your starting point:
- π³π Monthly Meet & Greet π€πΌπ² - A relaxed gathering that brings together familiar faces and new members alike. It is the perfect setting to share your passions and start building friendships.
- π₯Ύπ³ Social Walk & Drinks π»π - Although these events contain a 5-7 mile stroll, these gatherings are less about the walking and more about the talking! They offer a gentle walk to discover Oxford while building your own friendships.
Why Do We Do This πͺ
Building a social circle from scratch can be tough and we completely understand the consequences social isolation can led to.Β We host these events to bridge that gap and offer a home for anyone looking for their crowd in Oxford. We provide the initial meetup to give our members a social life.Β You then use the events and our WhatsApp Community to take control of your social lives!
What Makes Us Unique To Other Social Events β
We operate on a social model, not a profit-driven one, so there will not be an act of service provided to our members. Instead, we provide a platform to give our members the power and autonomy to take control of their social lives. In addition, we do not make exaggerated claims about being the "biggest or best" to inflate numbers. Instead, our goal is genuine connection supported by a safe, transparent environment.
We maintain firm boundaries to keep our events safe and reliable. By requiring recognisable profile photos and holding members accountable to accurate RSVPs, we actively discourage disruptive behaviour and eliminate the frustration of inaccurate headcount numbers.
Community Guidelines & Expectations π€
To keep our events enjoyable for everyone, we ask all members to adhere to these three key simple standards:
- Mutual Respect β€ - Treat everyone in the group with kindness and consideration.
- Appreciate Our Hostsπ - While feedback is always welcome, please keep in mind that organisers host events in their spare time and some great suggestions may be too difficult for the host to manage, or may conflict with core group values.
- Accurate RSVP's β - Keeping your RSVP up to date ensures our events remain safe and predictable. (See our full rules listed at the bottom of the page).
Joining the WhatsApp Community π±
To protect member safety and foster familiar faces, access to our WhatsApp sub-groups will only be shared with members who have attended at least one in-person event.
We expect your WhatsApp profile to display a clear, recognisable photo of yourself and your real name. If your profile does not meet these criteria, you will need to verify your identity with the lead organiser before gaining access.
Costs & Support π°
All events organised by the Oxford Social Circle are 100% free to attend. Despite this, Meetup does have annual costs of approximately Β£400 per year.
To help cover the annual operational costs of running the group, we occasionally open windows for voluntary donations. Financial contributions are entirely optional, but any support is deeply appreciated and keeps our community active and sustainable for everyone.Β Please keep in mind that donations made are to keep the group running. It makes no impact on the frequency of events, as well as the type of meetups we host.
Group Rules π
By coming to our events, you have agreed to abide by the following policies:
1. Be Respectful of Others ππΌ
Weβre a diverse bunch, and although you will meet plenty of like-minded people, you might not vibe with everyone. Remember, we expect total mutual respect. If you disagree with someone, keep it civil. Harassmentβwhether at an event or onlineβwill not be tolerated.
2. Appreciate what Organisers do β€οΈ
Please keep in mind that we arenβt a business. Our organisers are volunteers who put in their own time because they love the community. Weβre here to have a good time right alongside you, so a little appreciation goes a long way!
3. Keep Your Profile Transparent π€³πΎ
To ensure the safety of members at our events, everyone must have a clear, valid photo of themselves on their profile. This isn't personalβitβs a group-wide security measure to help us know exactly who weβre hanging out with.
4. Manage Your RSVP's Accordantly β
Accuracy matters! "No-shows" and "gatecrashers" make planning difficult and can lead to overbooked venues or unnecessary costs. If your plans change, please update your status. Members who consistently skip out or show up unannounced, without good reason, will be removed from our group.
5. Let the Hosts Lead π€
Each event has a specific plan curated by the organiser. To keep things running smoothly, please don't try to hijack or redirect the itinerary. If you have ideas for extra activities, feel free to suggest them for after the official event has wrapped up.
6. No Unauthorised Promoting π
π»
We love seeing the community grow, but please don't advertise outside events or activities on our Meetup pages without asking first. If you have something youβd like to share that fits our vibe, reach out to the lead organiser for the green light.
7. Personal Responsibility & Safety β οΈ
By attending our events, you acknowledge that you do so at your own risk. Whist the groups hosts will always do their best to support you, as we are not a business, we accept no liability for any personal injury, illness, loss, or damage to personal belongings that may occur during an event.
8. Alcohol & Behaviour Policy π»
While many of our gatherings take place in pubs or involve drinks, we expect everyone to drink responsibly. Intoxicated, aggressive, or disorderly behaviour won't be tolerated, and hosts reserve the right to ask anyone causing a disturbance to leave.
9. Keep Conversations Inclusive π¬
Our events are meant to be a relaxed escape where everyone feels welcome. Try to keep group conversations inclusive and avoid dominating discussions or forcing any aggressive political, religious, or divisive debates.
10. Not a Dating Group / No Unsolicited Messaging π«
We are a social group focused on friendship and community. Do not use the group or our WhatsApp channels to send unsolicited private messages to members you haven't met or who haven't invited further contact. Persistent unwanted attention will lead to an immediate ban.
11. Age Requirement π
All events are strictly for adults aged 18 and over. Members are not permitted to bring children to events unless it is explicitly listed as family-friendly.
12. Guests Policy π₯
If you want to bring a friend, please ask them to join the group and RSVP individually so we can keep an accurate headcount. If an event allows non-member guests, ensure you add them via your RSVP status on Meetup.
